Emmanuel of Canal
Joseph Emmanuel Malabayla , from 1769 Count von Canal (born June 3, 1745 in Vienna , † February 20, 1826 in Prague ) was a Bohemian philanthropist and botanist . He is considered an important agricultural reformer and was an honorary citizen of Prague. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Malab. "
family
He came from an old Italian noble family allegedly of Venetian origin and was the son of the royal Sardinian State and Conference Minister Ludwig Malabayla Count von Canal (1704–1773) and Maria Countess von Pálffy († 1781). Canal married in 1769 the widowed Brigitte Countess Taaffe (1738-1810), nee Countess Chotek von Chotkowa and Wognin , the daughter of the Colonel Chancellor of the Kingdom of Bohemia in Turin , Rudolph Count Chotek von Chotkow and Wognin (1708-1771), and the Aloysia Countess Kinsky from Wchinitz and Tettau (1707-1786).
Life
Canal was in royal military service until 1770, most recently as lieutenant colonel . In 1768 he became royal chamberlain and secret councilor , and in 1810 he became a real secret councilor. He was also president of the “Bohemian Patriotic Agricultural Society”. He founded the orphanage and widows' institute in Prague, a botanical school, and dedicated the so-called “Canal Garden” (“Kanálka”) to the public. Ignaz Friedrich Tausch , who was employed as a professor at Canal Gardens, cataloged his plants . He was also a member of the "Bohemian Economic-Patriotic Society" and in 1793 its president.
He was Grand Master of the Freemasons , in 1781 with the name "a Tulipa" in the Strict Observance and founded the Prague Masonic Lodge "For Truth and Unity on the Three Crowned Pillars", which opened on November 30, 1783 and was forcibly dissolved on May 1, 1794 has been; many personalities of the intellectual and cultural life of the Bohemian metropolis belonged to this lodge and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart also visited it several times. In the same year 1783 Canal was Deputy Master of the Provincial Lodge of Bohemia, 1793 honorary member of the Brno Lodge "To the true united friends" and a visitor to the Viennese lodge " To true harmony ". Canal was also a member of the Order of Illuminati founded in 1776 by Adam Weishaupt (1748-1830) under the name Ptolemy Philadelphus .
