Enno III. (Born September 30, 1563 in Aurich ; † August 19, 1625 in Leerort ) was Count of East Friesland from 1599 to 1625. He was the eldest son of Edzard II of East Friesland (House Cirksena ) and Catherine of Sweden . He is considered the last East Frisian sovereign who mastered the East Frisian language .

Life

After the male line of the Counts of Rietberg died out , the Counts of East Friesland became Ennos III due to the marital union. with Walburga von Rietberg her successor. Enno waived in 1600 Berumer comparison but in favor of his daughters to Rietberg and received the East Frisian Harlingerland , the Rietberg since 1540 in personal union was connected. With that an old chapter - the conflict with the Harlingerland - was finally over.

Enno initially seemed to be on the right track in the dispute with the estates . He concluded the Emden Concordats with them and the city of Emden . However, the peace in the country only lasted until Enno raised new taxes to fill the empty state purse. In the following dispute, the Emden troops called for help from the United Netherlands , which from 1602 had a permanent garrison in the city. In the Osterhusischen accord , the rights of the estates were finally confirmed by Enno.

After he had left the Leerort fortress to the Dutch in 1611 , East Frisia was so strongly under Dutch rule that Enno even applied for East Frisia to be admitted to the Netherlands. However, this failed because of the estates. During the Thirty Years War (→ Ostfriesland at the time of the Thirty Years War ), however, the Dutch used Ostfriesland as a winter supply base and, without Enno having been able to do anything about it, housed the dreaded troops of the mercenary Ernst von Mansfeld in the country from 1622.

Enno was limited to his seat in Esens and could not even prevent the dreaded Mansfelder from robbing him of the money that had been made available for the Berum settlement.

Enno III. Was married twice. On January 29, 1581 he married Walburga Countess von Rietberg (* around 1557 in Rietberg , † May 26, 1586 in Esens), daughter of Count Johann II. Von Rietberg, Lord of Esens, Stedesdorf and Wittmund and Agnes Countess of Bentheim-Steinfurt . There were three children from this marriage:

  • Sabina Catharina (* August 11, 1582; ​​† May 31, 1618) ∞ on March 4, 1601 her uncle Johann III. of East Friesland (* 1566; † September 29, 1625)
  • Agnes (January 1, 1584; † February 28, 1616) ∞ August 15, 1603 Prince Gundaker of Liechtenstein (January 30, 1580; † August 5, 1658)
  • Johann Edzard (10 May 1586 - 20 May 1586), buried in Esens (St. Magnus).

Twelve years after the death of his first wife, Enno III married. on January 28, 1598 in Esens Anna von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf (* February 27, 1575 - † April 14, 1610). This marriage had 5 children:
