Life
Enrique Dussel was born in Mendoza (Argentina) in 1934 as the great-grandson of a Schweinfurters . From 1953 to 1957 Dussel studied philosophy in Mendoza. He finished his studies with a Licenciatura : This is a degree that is customary in South America after four to six years of study and is comparable to a diploma . In 1959 Dussel received his doctorate in philosophy from the Spanish Complutense University of Madrid . From 1959 to 1961 he worked as a carpenter in Nazareth . 1961–1965 he studied theology at the Institut Catholique de Paris , which he graduated with a license (Bachelor), and in 1967 another doctorate, this time in history at the Paris Sorbonne with Robert Ricard . During this time he worked in 1964 at the Mainz Institute for European History with Joseph Lortz as a research assistant.
In 1967, Dussel returned to Argentina at a time when revolutionary movements in Latin America were trying to overcome oligarchic rule. From 1967 to 1975 Dussel taught as a professor of church history and ethics in Argentina. In Argentina, Dussel began, in constant exchange with Juan Carlos Scannone , among others , with the elaboration of his Ethics of Latin American Liberation ( Ética de la liberación latinoamericana ), which grows to five volumes. In 1975 he was driven out by the Peronists and went into exile in Mexico . In 1976 he took up a professorship for Latin American theology and church history and philosophical ethics at the philosophical faculty of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in the Iztapalapa district of Mexico City. He later taught at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (also in Mexico City) and became the coordinator of the Asociación de Filosofía y Liberación (AFYL).
In 2010 Dussel was Albertus Magnus Professor at the University of Cologne .
Philosophy and positions
Dussel sharply criticizes modernity. His philosophy of liberation, however, is not anti-modernist. Dussel does not idealize the premodern cultures of Latin America, as z. B. Alberto Acosta does. Instead of postmodernism, his alternative is "transmodernism".
