Juan Carlos Scannone SJ (born September 2, 1931 in Buenos Aires , † November 27, 2019 in San Miguel , Argentina ) was an Argentine Jesuit , philosopher and theologian .

Life

Juan Carlos Scannone was born in 1931 into a family of Italian immigrants and grew up as the only child of his mother, a widow, in his hometown of Buenos Aires. As a pupil he got to know the Jesuits through their church, the Iglesia del Salvador , in which he attended Holy Mass every day , through lectures and as confessors . In 1949 he entered the Society of Jesus . After the novitiate in Córdoba , he studied philosophy at the Philosophical Faculty of the Universidad del Salvador in San Miguel from 1951, where he received his licentiate in 1956 with a thesis on Thomas Aquinas supervised by Miguel Ángel Fiorito (1916-2005)of philosophy. He then taught Classical Greek at the Philosophical Faculty in San Miguel . One of his students was the future Pope Jorge Mario Bergoglio . He completed his theology studies at the University of Innsbruck , among others with Karl Rahner and Hugo Rahner , in 1962 with a licentiate in theology. In the same year he was ordained a priest . In 1968, Scannone was accepted by the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with a dissertation supervised by Max Müller on the bond between being and beings in action. On the ontological background of Maurice Blondel's early writings on Dr. phil. PhD. From 1968 he taught as a professor of philosophy at the Philosophical Faculty of the Universidad del Salvador, of which he was dean several times. He lived in the Jesuit community of the Colegio Máximo in San Miguel near Buenos Aires.

Scannone was - together with Lucio Gera , Rafael Tello and Justino O'Farrell - one of the "fathers" of the Argentine form of the theology of liberation , which is usually referred to as the "theology of the people". In contrast to some other liberation theologians of his generation, the starting point of his philosophy and theology was not the analysis of society (partly guided by Marxist categories) but - among other things - the perception of culture, the wisdom of the "common people" (gente humilde ) and popular piety . Scannone dealt extensively and repeatedly with the work of Maurice Blondel , Martin Heidegger , Jean-Luc Marion , Emmanuel Levinas , Paul Ricœur and Bernhard Welte . He was in lively exchange with Horacio Cerutti Guldberg, Enrique Dussel , Alberto Methol Ferré, Amelia Podetti, Ignacio Ellacuría , Gustavo Gutiérrez , Peter Hünermann , Pedro Trigo, Günter Rodolfo Kusch, Dina Picotti and Víctor Codina. Together with Lucio Gera, he significantly shaped the theological thinking of Pope Francis. Scannone and Bergoglio lived in the same community in Buenos Aires for more than ten years .

Scannone was president of the Argentine Theological Society (Sociedad Argentina de Teología) for many years . He headed the research group “Church Social Ethics” of the Organización de las Universidades Católicas de América Latina (ODUCAL) and the Theological Commission of the Argentine Religious Conference ( Conferencia Argentina de Religiosos y Religiosas , CONFAR). He was an advisor to the Latin American Bishops' Council (CELAM) and the Latin American Religious Conference ( Confederación Latinoamericana de Religiosos , CLAR). From 1969 he was a member of the editorial board of the magazine Stromata , from 1975 to the editorial committee for fundamental theology of Concilium . Scannone was visiting professor at numerous universities in Europe and North America, such as Frankfurt am Main , Munich, Salzburg , Vienna and Leuven . He was chairman of the Buenos Aires Advisory Board of the Latin America-Germany Scholarship Organization and a member of the Buenos Aires local committee of the Catholic Academic Foreigners Service (KAAD).

Juan Carlos Scannone died of a stroke on November 27, 2019 . He was buried in the chapel of the Colegio Máximo in San Miguel.
