Entremont is a village and a former French commune with the last 664 inhabitants (2015) in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

With effect from January 1, 2019, the former municipalities of Le Petit-Bornand-les-Glières and Entremont were merged to form the Commune nouvelle Glières-Val-de-Borne . The former municipalities were not granted the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are located in Le Petit-Bornand-les-Glières.

geography

Entremont is located at 780  m , south of Bonneville , about 20 km east of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The mountain village extends in a basin on both sides of the Borne, in the middle of the Bornes Alps (part of the Savoy Alps ), at the northern foot of Mont Lachat. The central part of the area is the Entremont basin, which is crossed from south to north by the Borne , a tributary of the Arve . A short side valley flows from the southwest at Entremont. Striking rock chains form the surrounding heights that enclose this basin. In the northwest this is the Montagne des Auges ( 1909  m ), in the southwest the Mont Lachat (with 2020  m the highest elevation of Entremont) and in the east the Roc de Charmieux ( 1878  m ). To the south the area extends into the Défilé des Etroits , a deeply cut gorge of the Borne.

history

A priory was founded in Entremont in the 12th century, which was elevated to an abbey in the 13th century. After a new building in the 17th century, the abbey was closed in the course of the French Revolution .

Attractions

The village church, originally from the 12th century, was later rebuilt several times and contains rich furnishings and an important church treasure. Only a few remains of the abbey from the 12th and 17th centuries have survived. Also noteworthy are the Notre-Dame de la Rivière chapel and the Le Regard chapel.

The mountain huts (“chalets”) and traditional farms were also shaped by the traditional Savoy architecture.

Entremont was one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 20th century the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1901 there were 589 inhabitants in Entremont). Since the mid-1980s, however, a significant increase in population has been recorded, as many residents of the region had to migrate from the expensive ski areas of La Clusaz & Le-Grand-Bornand.

Economy and Infrastructure

Entremont was a village dominated by agriculture and alpine farming (cheese making) well into the 20th century . Today there are some small businesses. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. The main access is from Bonneville through the Borne Valley. Entremont is located between Annecy and Geneva. Many residents work either in Switzerland or in the surrounding ski areas. There are also road links with Grand-Bornand and Saint-Jean-de-Sixt. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 17 km away.
