Epaminondas José de Araújo

Epaminondas José de Araújo (born March 19, 1922 in Caiçara , Paraíba , † June 9, 2010 in João Pessoa ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Palmeira dos Índios .

Life

Epaminondas José de Araújo studied philosophy at the Diocesan Seminary in Paraíba from 1939 to 1940 and theology from 1941 to 1945 in João Pessoa . He was ordained a priest on August 12, 1945 . In 1946 he became a professor at the Diocesan Seminary in João Pessoa. He was vicar in Alagoinha in 1951 , in Araruna from 1952 to 1953 and in Alagoa Grande from 1954 to 1956 . In 1956 he completed postgraduate studies in religious studies and sociology in Rio de Janeiro . In 1958 he was appointed vicar at the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paraíba .

Pope John XXIII appointed him on December 14, 1959 as the first bishop of the diocese of Ruy Barbosa established on the same date . The apostolic nuncio in Brazil , Archbishop Armando Lombardi , donated him episcopal ordination on March 27 of the following year ; Co- consecrators were Eugênio de Araújo Sales , auxiliary bishop in Natal , and Otàvio Barbosa Aguiar , bishop of Campina Grande . His motto was "In verb tuo".

From 1962 to 1965 he participated as a council father in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council . Pope Paul VI appointed him on October 27, 1966 the first bishop of the newly established diocese of Anápolis and on June 5, 1978 to the bishop of Palmeira dos Índios .

On November 28, 1984, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation. He died of complications from cancer.
