The Archeparchy Asmara ( Latin Archieparchia Asmarensis ) is an archeparchy of the Eritrean Catholic Church located in Eritrea , which is united with the Roman Catholic Church .

history

On July 4, 1930 the Ordinariat Eritrea was founded with an area of 119,000 km², it counted in 1950 26,186 (2.9%) believers in 65 parishes with 83 diocesan priests and 89 religious sisters . Raised to the Apostolic Exarchate on October 31, 1951, it became an eparchy on February 20, 1961 and thus became a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Addis Ababa .

After it had grown to 60,780 believers in 87 parishes with 78 diocesan priests , 108 religious priests and 475 religious sisters by 1990 , the Eparchy Barentu and the Eparchy Keren were removed from it on December 21, 1995 , so that it now has an area of 53,185 km².

On January 19, 2015, Pope Francis elevated the Asmara eparchy to an archeparchy, incorporated it into the newly founded Eritrean Catholic Church and made the Barentu, Keren and Segheneity eparchies subject to it as suffragandiocese .

The main church is the Kidane Mehret Cathedral in Asmara .
