Epidemic was an American death and thrash metal band from San Francisco , California that was formed in 1987 and disbanded in 1994.

history

The band was formed in April 1987 by two guitarists Guy Higbey and Erik Moggridgeby and bassist Mark Bodine for a high school talent show. In the summer Geoff Bruce was added as a drummer, before the singer Carl Fulli completed the line-up in September. After the band won a Battle of the Bands, they opened up for Death Angel . In December 1987 the band recorded the demo, which was released in 1988. The band mailed 200 copies while Bob Cochran joined the band as the new drummer. Several appearances followed, including together with Dirty Rotten Imbeciles , before a second demo followed in 1989, of which 2,000 copies were sold. Metalcore Records became aware of the material and released the demo as the album The Truth of What Will Be in 1989, which had a circulation of 5,000 copies. In the same year, the band was able to play as opening act for Slayer on their South of Heaven tour. In January 1991 the band went to the Telluride Studio to record the Demo Extremities '91 . The song Circle of Fools , which was included under on the demo, was also on the Metal Blade Records sampler Metal Massacre XI . The band was able to do this especially because the band manager Marco Barbieri now worked for Metal Blade Records. Label boss Brian Slagel finally became aware of the band and signed them. The band then went to the studio in winter and released the album Decameron in early July 1992 . The title refers to the collection of novels Decamerone , which is related to the Black Death . Meanwhile it went on tour with Entombed and Dead Horse. The band then went on tour with Malevolent Creation and Suffocation to replace Exhorder , which was replaced by Epidemic due to improper behavior. In the same year, the band also played again as the opening act for Slayer. After the guitarist Higbey left the band without replacement, the band's last album was released under the name Exit Paradise . During their career the band played with bands such as Sepultura , Testament , Primus , Morbid Angel and Death, among others . In 2004 the band Exhumed released their version of the epidemic song In Fear We Kill on their cover album Regurgitated Requiems: Garbage Daze Re-Regurgitated .

style

According to Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia , with the release of Decameron , the band made a transition from Thrash to Death Metal. The Thrash Metal influences would have been further reduced on Exit Paradise . On the album you can hear clear influences from bands like Sepultura and Obituary . According to Martin Popoff in his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 2: The Eighties, the band on The Truth of What Will Be play a mixture of hardcore punk and thrash metal, which for him is basically just fast-played punk . In addition, it is for a blueprint for the later developing Death Metal. In his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 3: The Nineties , Popoff described the music on Exit Paradise as simple and gloomy Death Metal, which also had Doom Metal influences. The music is like a mixture of The Melvins and The Obsessed , with slight additions of Entombed and Hawkwind , as they would have sounded around 1973. In addition, Grindcore influences can be heard. In a separate issue of Metal Hammer , the music on Decameron was described as hard Death Metal. In an interview with the magazine, Eric Moggridge stated that all members grew up with heavy metal . He himself also indicated an influence of the early Pink Floyd . Besides bands like Slayer , groups like Public Enemy are also important for the band.
