Eppstein is a district and a district of the independent city Frankenthal (Pfalz) in Rhineland-Palatinate . Until 1969 Eppstein was an independent municipality.

geography

Center with the two church towers

Eppstein is located in the Upper Palatinate Rhine plain 94 meters above sea level about three kilometers south of Frankenthal (Palatinate). It borders immediately to the south on the district of Flomersheim , from which it is only separated by the Isenach tributary of the Rhine . The area is woodless.

history

Surname

The first syllable of the name is derived from Abbo or Ebbo . This is an abbreviation or nickname of the name Eberhard. Thus the nucleus of Eppstein would have been the property of an Eberhard. The place name on -stein is documented here even before the High Middle Ages and indicates a pre-Carolingian, probably Roman stone building or its striking ruin.

timeline

Archaeological finds are known from almost all epochs. The first documentary mention was made in 769 in the Lorsch Codex . Based on the excavations carried out so far, however, it can be assumed that Eppstein had existed as a settlement since the late 5th century. Eppstein is thus one of the places that arose before the so-called Franconian conquest of the Upper Rhine and the mouth of the Neckar around 500 AD .

The part of Eppstein that was not subordinate to the Augustinian Canons of Frankenthal was, as the files say, "ancient Neustadter Mannslehen". Between the 12th and 14th centuries, members of a lower nobility dynasty von Eppstein are documented as tenants . His residence, which was more of a permanent house than a castle, can no longer be located today; there are also no sources that could provide clues or be the basis for speculation. Statements to the contrary do not stand up to critical examination due to possible confusion with Eppstein (Taunus) or Elmstein Castle (Palatinate).

Eppstein was destroyed both in the Thirty Years' War and in the Palatinate War of Succession (1689).

The more recent history of Eppstein corresponds to that of the surrounding Palatinate . During the administrative reform in which the district of Frankenthal (Palatinate) was dissolved, it was incorporated into the nearby city on June 7, 1969 .

Historical people

Basically, the problem with Eppstein is that probably only the part of the lower aristocracy who actually lived in the village called themselves "von Eppstein". In the absence of sources, it is almost impossible to reconstruct the relationships. Most of the aristocrats of the Middle Ages with the name “von Eppstein” can be assigned to the place and gender in the Taunus, as the Palatinate bearers of the name should not come into question from the standpoint.

In 1193 a Gerhard von Eppstein is mentioned in the documents of the Weißenburg monastery , who was wealthy in Heßheim in Wormsgau .

At the end of the 12th century, Sigfried von Eppstein was provost of the Martinskirche in Worms . He is named in a document dated April 25, 1194 with Werner, Ritter von Dirmstein , as a witness in a settlement made by Bishop Konrad von Mainz about the patronage rights of the Pauluskirche in Worms .

The following names can be determined from the family of the Knights of Eppstein as fiefs of the place Eppstein im Wormsgau: Markwart (1167–1200), Berthold (1216–1253), Heinrich I. (1254–1274), Jakob (1285), Baldemar ( 1318), Frank (1375) and Heinrich II. (Around 1380). This left no male offspring. After the family died out, the lords of Oberstein became new feudal lords. 1390 was then a Sigfried von Wildenstein in possession of the fief. However, another count Wendel von Eppstein is mentioned in a document from 1481 .

Conczichen von Eppstein (1383) and Berthold von Eppstein (1399) are also mentioned in connection with other documents . However, it is not possible to distinguish whether they belonged to the Eppstein family in Wormsgau or Taunus.

In addition to the above, a knight Eckebrecht von Eppstein has come down to us (1351).

The Palatinate local historian and pastor Emil Müller (1864–1918) came from Eppstein .

Blazon : "In gold, a black horseshoe with cleats turned downwards."

A horseshoe seal is first detectable in 1782. Today's coat of arms was approved by the Bavarian state on June 27, 1841 and has been in use ever since.

Reasons for the coat of arms: The horseshoe is interpreted as a reference to the well-known Eppstein horse breeding.

politics

A local district was formed for the Eppstein district. The interests of the residents are represented by a separate body. The local advisory board consists of nine advisory board members, the chair of the local advisory board is chaired by the directly elected mayor .

For the composition of the local council, see the results of the local elections in Frankenthal (Palatinate) .
