Ernesto Drangosch (composer)

Ernesto Drangosch (born January 22, 1882 in Buenos Aires ; † June 26, 1925 there ) was an Argentine pianist and composer.

Drangosch was born in Argentina as the son of German immigrants. His father, Carlos Drangosch, was the owner of the Drangosch & Beines music store . He already took piano lessons at an early age and entered in 1891 with the orchestra of the Opera House, led by Prieto Melani with Beethoven's First Piano Concerto on. At another concert, Alberto Williams became aware of the gifted pianist and in 1894 brought him to the Buenos Aires School of Music. In addition to Williams , his teachers included Julián Aguirre , Carlos Marchal and Luigi Forino (cello).

From 1897 he studied at the Academy of Music in Berlin with Karl Heinrich Barth piano, with Max Bruch harmony and counterpoint, with Joseph Joachim choir and orchestra conducting and with Carl Krebs musical aesthetics and history. Musicians such as Felix Weingartner , Arthur Nikisch , Ignatz Paderewski , Arturo Toscanini , Arthur Rubinstein , Jan Kubelík , Franz von Vecsey , Edvard Grieg and Siegfried Wagner were impressed by his talent and personality.

In 1900 Drangosch returned to Argentina to take part in the competition for the Gran Premio Europa , a four-year scholarship funded by the Comisión Nacional de Bellas Artes . In 1901 he returned to Berlin and took piano lessons from Conrad Ansorge and composition lessons from Engelbert Humperdinck . He also performed as a pianist with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Joachim, Ferruccio Busoni and Eugen d'Albert .

From 1905 to 1907 he taught at the Conservatorio de Música de Buenos Aires , after which he directed the Casa de Estudios Ernesto Drangosch, which he founded and named after him until his death . His students included u. a. Arnaldo D'Espósito , Silvia Eisenstein , Luis Gianneo , Honorio Siccardi and Raul Spivak . In 1924 Carlos López Buchardo appointed him professor at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música .

In addition, Drangosch developed an intensive concert activity in Argentina and neighboring countries. In the Doce conciertos históricos concert series, he performed twelve representative classical and romantic works for piano and orchestra in three concerts each, and in 1916 played all of Beethoven's piano sonatas on several concert tours .

In addition to piano works, Drangosch also composed orchestral and chamber music, choral works and songs. In many of his works he fused traditional European music with popular American rhythms such as tango , samba , shimmy , cakewalk , maxixe , pericón and vidalita . Two works for the stage were not performed. Drangosch died of pneumonia in 1925 shortly before a planned European tour.
