Live and act

Ernst Erich Metzner spent his early childhood in his birthplace, a mountain village near Opava is located and then to the former Sudetenschlesien belonged. After the Second World War , the Beneš decrees resulted in the expulsion of the German population. The Metzner family also had to leave their homeland; In 1946 Ernst Erich Metzner came to West Germany with his mother and sister, who was twelve years older than him .

After finishing school, Metzner studied German , history , political science and Scandinavian studies at the University of Frankfurt am Main. He passed the state examination for high school teaching and then worked as a lecturer in Aarhus , Denmark . In 1969 he received his doctorate in Frankfurt with a thesis on the earliest history of European ballad poetry .

From 1972 he was Professor of German Philology at the Institute for German Language and Literature II at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . His main focus areas included medieval literature and historical linguistics . From 1999 to 2001 he was managing director of the Institute for Scandinavian Studies. Several visiting professorships took Metzner to Florence , Lublin and Lyon . In 2001 he retired from active university operations, but has continued to devote himself to science ever since.

As a linguist and historian, Metzner dealt with, among other things, "older and newer literature , German-Scandinavian literary relations in the Middle Ages and modern times" as well as "linguistic, naming and historical topics, especially from the Rhine-Main area and East German Slavic penetration area ". Influenced by his personal biography, he placed his research in a European context and was committed, among other things, to contacts with Scandinavia , especially Denmark and Norway , for maintaining the Scandinavian Institute at Frankfurt University at the end of the 1990s and for the German-Slavic cultural exchange. In addition, the Rhine-Main area as his “new home” was repeatedly the subject of Metzner's linguistic historical research and benefited from it.

Metzner published several specialist books and also made his research results known in regional and national newspapers and university publications with numerous articles, lectures and interviews.

Ernst Erich Metzner lives in Rüsselsheim am Main .
