Ernst Heinrich von der Brüggen ( Russian : Эраст Дмитриевич Брюгген; born June 11, 1794 in Koiküll or Karolen, Werro district ; † September 13, 1863 in Saint Petersburg ) was a German-Baltic nobleman in the service of the Imperial Russian Army . He was lieutenant general and received the highest rank among the Russian Cossacks when he was appointed ataman .

Military background

His military career began in 1812 as a cadet in the Life Guards 1st Artillery - Brigade . In 1813 he was promoted to ensign and served in the 4th Reserve Artillery Brigade. He completed several posts in the army , was a participant in the Russian campaign in 1812 , in the Sixth Coalition War and took part in the conquest of Paris until he was transferred to the Guards Artillery in 1820. He was promoted in 1828 to colonel , the remainder of the year he was in the suppression of the Polish uprising used by the 1831st His extensive artillery experience and theoretical knowledge led to his being appointed chief of the 6th Mounted Artillery Brigade.

On December 6, 1837, he was promoted to major general and appointed ataman of the Astrakhan Cossack Army. He was only able to take up this post on May 15, 1838. In his new role as ataman he began to reorganize the Astrakh Cossack troops. He drew up a plan of priorities, streamlined the division of duties and introduced strict forms and discipline . He arranged the areas of responsibility and promoted staff and material readiness for action . The regimental commanders had to take personal responsibility for the condition of their units, which was checked by an annual inspection . In 1845 the new army ordinances also came into force in the Cossack army. In addition, von der Brüggen ensured a higher level of training for the Cossack officers , who were now being taught at the artillery school. The training company and the cadet training of the Cossacks were directly subordinated to the army command. Not only the members of the army, but also their sons and daughters now enjoyed schooling , Brüggen ensured the establishment of educational institutions at the military locations .

On April 21, 1848 he took over the command of the Novgorod Department of the military settlements. His promotion to lieutenant general took place in 1849, from 1852 to 1856 he was in command of the Novgorod region of agricultural soldiers and member of the general auditorium .

Origin and family

Ernst Heinrich vdB came from the German-Baltic noble family von der Brüggen, who had settled in the Baltic States at the beginning of the 16th century. His father was the Courland District Administrator Diedrich von der Brüggen (1771-1836), who was married to Johanna Maria von Gersdorff (1773-1838). His younger brother Moritz Friedrich von der Brüggen (1796–1874) was also in Russian service and major general. Ernst Heinrich married Wilhelmine Anna Briesmann von Nettig (1805-1893), they had no descendants
