Ernst Mühlemann (born June 17, 1930 in Illhart TG ; † September 11, 2009 in Ermatingen TG) was a Swiss politician ( FDP ). He was a member of the National Council from 1983 to 1999 .

Life

The son of a farmer attended the teachers' college in Kreuzlingen . He then studied pedagogy , German and history at the universities of Zurich , Paris and Florence .

Mühlemann worked from 1956 to 1960 as a secondary teacher in Weinfelden . Afterwards he was a teacher, boarding school director and administrator at the teachers seminar in Kreuzlingen. From 1972 until his retirement in 1992, he was director of the Swiss Bank Corporation at the Wolfsberg training center in Ermatingen, which he had co-founded. From 1979 he held teaching positions for corporate management at the University of Konstanz and from 1983 at the ETH Zurich . After retirement he was a consultant at the Lillienberg Entrepreneur Forum in Ermatingen.

Mühlemann was a brigadier in the Swiss Army . He was Chief of Staff of Field Army Corps 4, Commander of Border Brigade 7 and Chief of the Strategy Group in the Army Staff. In 1971 he survived a helicopter crash below the Hörnli during a maneuver . Corps commander Adolf Hanslin died, as did the pilot later.

Mühlemann was married, had three daughters and lived in Ermatingen in the canton of Thurgau until the end . He died there on September 11, 2009 in his home.

politics

From 1964 to 1968 Mühlemann was a member of the Kreuzlingen municipal council . In 1983 he was elected to the National Council, to which he belonged until his resignation in 1999. The long-standing member of the Foreign Policy Commission (President 1994/95) was referred to by the Neue Zürcher Zeitung as Switzerland's “shadow foreign minister”. In addition, he was mainly active in economic and media politics.

From 1991 to 1999 Mühlemann was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe , whose Swiss delegation he chaired in 1996/97. As a diplomat and chief reporter of the Council of Europe , he negotiated with Gorbachev and Shevardnadze , traveled and mediated between Bern, Strasbourg, Brussels, Washington, Moscow, the Balkans and the Caucasus.

Ernst Mühlemann was committed to Switzerland's active role in the world.

Mühlemann presided over the Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences and the Board of Directors of Lokalradio Thurgau AG. He was treasurer at the International Green Cross . He was also active as President of the Thurgau Art Society (1959–1979) and as President of the International Lake Constance Club. From 1959 to 1979 Mühlemann was President of the Thurgau Art Society and promoted the establishment of an art museum in his home canton.
