Ernst Meister (writer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ernst Meister (born September 3, 1911 in Haspe , today a district of Hagen , † June 15, 1979 in Hagen) was a German poet and writer .

Life

Ernst Meister attended the municipal upper secondary school (meanwhile Reformrealgymnasium) in Haspe and passed his Abitur there in 1930. This school, later renamed Ernst-Meister-Gymnasium , is now the Haspe Comprehensive School.

At his father's request, Meister began studying theology in Marburg in 1930 , but then turned to German studies , philosophy and art history and began studying in Berlin at the end of 1931. The publishing side of Marburger leaflets (Marburg) he published in 1932 his first book of poetry exhibition .

After the National Socialists came to power, his teacher Karl Löwith went into exile, so that Meister could not finish his dissertation. From now on, as an author, too, apart from three smaller publications in the Frankfurter Zeitung , Meister wrote for the drawer.

From 1939 to 1960 he was officially employed as a gardener in his father's factory, but only worked there sporadically and with major interruptions.

Meister took part in World War II as a soldier . He processed the diverse, mainly war-related experiences in lyrical contributions as well as in stories , radio plays and plays . But it was not until the early 1950s that Meister began to publish his texts again, initially with Victor Otto Stomps in the Eremiten-Presse in Stierstadt. There the volumes appeared under the black sheep's fur (1953), the mirror cabinet opposite (1954), the south wind said to me (1955) and Fermate (1957). This was followed by numbers and figures in 1958, the formula and the site in 1960, flood and stone in 1962 and character by character in 1968. In between, the story Der Bluthänfling 1959 and the 1966 drama A House for My Children appeared . The late work, which is also the culmination of Meister's work, includes the volumes of poetry Es came the message (1970), Sage vom Ganzen den Satz (1972), Im Zeitspalt (1976) and Wallless Room (1979). The magazine Westfalenspiegel printed many of his texts and also paid tribute to Meister's abstract artistic work. In 1956, Meister was involved in the " Schmallenberg Poet Dispute ".

The poet and novelist Nicolas Born played a decisive role as a mentor for the poet, who lived in Hagen, from the end of the 1950s. As a member of the Petrarca Prize jury in the mid-1970s, Born ensured that Meisters was rediscovered as hermetically valid, almost forgotten poetry in its essential simplicity and timeless quality. Other younger authors who recognized Meister's importance during this time and who dealt with his work on a lasting basis were Hans Bender , Peter Handke , Michael Krüger , Christoph Meckel , Oskar Pastior , Jan Wagner and Paul Wühr .

Hubertus Heiser wrote about him in the Westfalenpost :

“His poetry was, as it were, an intellectual poetry in the form of a meditative and deeply thought-provoking poetry that asks about the basic forms and basic conditions of human existence in what Meister saw as 'cosmic abandonment'.
Like sparkling crystals, his poems in particular remained the treasures that are still perceived today, about which the Creator once said before the beginning of the verse: 'A poem is an event that has to work through itself in the directness of its existence'. "
