Ernst Friedrich Wilhelm Meumann (born August 29, 1862 in Uerdingen near Krefeld, † April 26, 1915 in Hamburg ) was a German experimental psychologist. He is considered to be the founder of educational psychology and experimental pedagogy in Germany.

Life

After graduating from high school in Elberfeld in 1883, Meumann first studied philosophy and art studies , then ev. Theology and worked as a private tutor before going to Leipzig after receiving his doctorate in 1891 with Christoph von Sigwart in Tübingen on "The Basic Law of Association and Reproduction of Ideas" at the Institute for experimental Psychology of Wilhelm Wundt went. During his studies he joined the Association of German Students in Bonn and Leipzig. From 1893 he worked here as an assistant and completed his habilitation the following year with the thesis "Investigations on the psychology and aesthetics of rhythm".

In 1896 Meumann was appointed professor of philosophy at the University of Zurich , where he stayed until 1905. There he built the Psychological Laboratory, the forerunner of the Psychological Institute. He also worked at the Universities of Königsberg, Münster, Halle (Saale) and Leipzig.

From the Ernst Meumann since 1911 at the Hamburg Colonial Institute established and founded in 1914, interdisciplinary landscaped Institute for Youth customer went in 1919 with the founding of the University of the Philosophy Department ( William Stern , Ernst Cassirer ), the Psychological Seminar (William Stern) and the Educational Seminar ( Gustaf Deuchler ). The educational scientist and headmaster of the Lichtwarkschule Peter Petersen also worked in a group for religious psychology . Meumann had been a board member of the Bund für Schulreform since 1911 and advocated radical reforms such as the standardized school and the academic training of elementary school teachers.

Meumann was co-founder and editor of the archive for the whole of psychology published from 1903 , from 1910 also the collection of treatises on psychological pedagogy - from the "Archive for the entire psychology" and from 1911 co-editor of the journal for pedagogical psychology and experimental pedagogy .

Meumann was the originator of the "theologian petition" of 1886/87, with which he spoke out in favor of the military service of Protestant theology students and against an attack by the Center Party against the military service of clergy.
