Erwin Geist (born May 31, 1916 in Schwenningen ; † July 4, 2012 in Schönaich ) was a German trade unionist and politician ( SPD ).

Life

Erwin Geist was born the son of a glazier and trade unionist. After graduating from elementary school in 1931, he joined the SAJ and the youth metalworkers. He completed an apprenticeship as a toolmaker at the Mauthe watch factory in Schwenningen and then moved to the Maybach engine manufacturer in Friedrichshafen as a skilled worker . From 1936 he did Reich Labor Service . He then worked for a short time at the Steinel machine works in Schwenningen before he was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1937 . After military service with the mountain troops in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he took part in World War II from 1939 and was deployed as a soldier in Poland, France, Yugoslavia and Russia. In September 1941 he suffered a serious wound during the Russian campaign and lost his left arm. In 1943 he left the army. Then he found employment again in industry.

After the end of the war, Geist first worked as a work planner in a machine factory and then worked as a union secretary for IG Metall . From there he came to the German Trade Union Federation and from 1950 to 1978 he was chairman of the DGB district association in Tübingen. In 1946 he joined the SPD. In addition, he was involved with the " Falcons " and was elected in 1947 as their state chairman for southern Württemberg. From 1953 to 1985 he was city ​​councilor in Tübingen and from 1953 to 1971 district councilor in the Tübingen district .

In the elections for the national constitutional assembly in 1952 , Geist ran in the constituency of Tübingen, but was defeated by the CDU candidate Gebhard Müller and, as there was no second count, could not move into parliament. In the state elections in 1956 , 1960 , 1964 and 1968 , he was then elected through this constituency as a member of the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg , to which he belonged until 1972. He reached parliament through the second mandate , except in 1960, when he prevailed against Jakob Krauss and won the direct mandate .

In addition to his political activities, Geist was chairman of the board of the AOK Tübingen from 1955 to 1980 .

Erwin Geist was married and had two children. He died on July 4, 2012 in Schönaich and was then buried in the Tübingen Bergfriedhof .
