Erwin Hinze

Erwin Paul Hinze (born August 8, 1909 in Nowawes , † February 18, 1972 in Potsdam ) was a German politician of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). Hinze was Mayor from 1950 to 1952 and Lord Mayor from 1952 to 1955 of Frankfurt (Oder) .

Life

Hinze attended elementary school and completed an apprenticeship as a boat builder . He joined the SPD in 1932 and was a member of it until it was dissolved by Wilhelm Frick on June 22, 1933. After the liberation of Germany, Hinze rejoined the SPD in 1945 and was a member of the newly founded SED from 1946 after the union of the SPD with the Communist Party of Germany .

After Hinze worked in various posts for the SED, he became mayor of Frankfurt (Oder) in 1950. After the city became a district in 1952, Hinze was elected as the city's first mayor. During Hinze's tenure, many structural changes were made in Frankfurt (Oder), for example the town hall was renovated and the Stadium of Friendship was built.
