Ernst Ludwig Richard Ruge (born April 12, 1878 in Görlitz , † September 3, 1953 in Baden-Baden ) was a German medic and mayor .

Life

Ernst Ruge was the son of the Reichsbank banker Albrecht Ruge (1849–1910), who later became head of the Reichsbank office in Frankfurt (Oder) . His great-uncle was the writer Arnold Ruge . Ruge had four siblings. A younger brother was the philosopher and ethnic nationalist Arnold Ruge (1881-1945). Ernst Ruge was related to the surgeon Rudolf Virchow .

Ernst Ruge studied medicine and was chief physician in the surgical-gynecological department of the Frankfurt hospital from 1910 to 1937. Since his wife was Jewish, he had to resign all of his honorary posts in 1933 (e.g. deputy chairman of the Brandenburg Medical Association or deputy chairman of the medical court of honor ). In the course of the so-called cleaning of the civil service , Ruge was dismissed as chief physician on December 31, 1937. In May 1938 he opened a private practice in his home in Halbe Stadt 8. Towards the end of the war , Ruge was interrogated by the Gestapo, according to his own statements, “because of careless remarks about Reichsleiter Himmler ” .

First post-war mayor in Frankfurt (Oder)

In addition to German, French, English and Italian, Ernst Ruge also spoke a little Russian. On April 27, 1945, four days after the city was conquered, Ruge was appointed Lord Mayor of Frankfurt (Oder) by the Red Army . He formed a magistrate based in Ruge's neighboring house, Halbe Stadt 7, and tried to solve the problems of the partly still burning city. Together with the three district mayors and those responsible for the roads, he began to clear the city and organize supplies for the population. A makeshift bridge was built over the Oder in May. Some of the residents returned. However, the residents of the Dammvorstadt were soon evicted by the new Polish authorities. Frankfurt was assigned to eleven municipalities from the western area. Ruge joined the SPD, but came into conflict with the provincial administration and resigned from the mayor's office in 1946. The provincial administration recalled him on August 7, 1946 with effect from the end of September 1946 from his office. In fact, on August 2, 1946, he no longer appears to have exercised his office.

He practiced as a doctor again, but went to Baden in 1952 , where he died shortly afterwards. His estate is in the Frankfurt (Oder) city archive.
