Fritz Krause (Mayor)

Fritz Max Krause (born April 13, 1925 in Tzschetzschnow ; † August 9, 2012 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) was a German SED functionary and, with 24 years of service, the longest-serving Lord Mayor of the city of Frankfurt (Oder) (1965–1990) .

Life

Fritz Krause was the oldest child of the carpenter Fritz Krause from Tzschetzschnow ( Güldendorf since 1937 and now a district of Frankfurt). There he attended school and later learned the trade of a businessman in the wallpaper wholesaler Albert Link. He was called up to the Navy during the Second World War in 1943 and had to clear mines in Norway while a British prisoner of war.

At the end of 1945 he returned to his destroyed hometown. He worked as a warehouse worker and joined the Free German Youth (FDJ) and the SED in 1947 . Krause was installed as district chairman in the incorporated Güldendorf in 1949 and as a city ​​councilor in Frankfurt (Oder) in 1950 . In June 1951 he became the first secretary of the FDJ district leadership in Frankfurt (Oder) and from 1957 to 1959 he was the second secretary of the FDJ district leadership in Frankfurt (Oder) . He then worked for some time in the SED district leadership and was delegated for three years to study at the party college of the CPSU in Moscow . Then he was again a political employee of the SED district leadership and from 1962 to 1965 employee of the council of the Frankfurt (Oder) district. In 1965 he qualified as a social scientist.

On November 4th, 1965 Krause was elected for the first time in the Frankfurt city council as chairman of the city council and mayor of the city of Frankfurt (Oder). He was confirmed on April 15, 1970, May 29, 1974, June 7, 1979, May 24, 1984 and May 25, 1989. Krause was also a member of the Frankfurt (Oder) district assembly. He was publicly recognized by the editor-in-chief of the Märkische Oder newspaper, Frank Mangelsdorf, for his supporting role in securing the ruins of the Marienkirche in the city .

Krause was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze in 1969 and in gold in 1985. He died at the age of 87.
