René Wilke (2016)

René Wilke (born June 30, 1984 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) is a German politician of the party Die Linke and Lord Mayor of the city of Frankfurt (Oder). In the state elections in Brandenburg in 2014 he was elected as a direct candidate in the state electoral district of Frankfurt (Oder) in the Brandenburg state parliament and represented the electoral district there until his resignation.

Life

As a child, Wilke lived in Moscow for five years until 1995 . He then attended the Otto-Brenner-Gymnasium in Frankfurt (Oder) and finished it with the Abitur. From 2005 to 2012 he studied cultural , political and administrative sciences and psychology at the European University Viadrina and the Open University in Hagen . In 2011 he acquired a qualification as a mediator with a focus on conflict management . In 2013 he completed his professional training as an office communication clerk . Before he became a member of the state parliament, he worked for the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and for the following members: Kerstin Meier (member of the Brandenburg state parliament), Thomas Nord ( member of the German Bundestag ), Helmut Scholz ( member of the European Parliament ) and Lothar Bisky (Member of the Bundestag).

Political career

At the age of 16 Wilke joined the party of democratic socialism (PDS), whose district chairman in Frankfurt (Oder) he became three years later. In Frankfurt (Oder) he was a member of the city ​​council from 2014 to 2018 and in this parliamentary group chairman of his parliamentary group as well as chairman of the economic and working committee.

Member of the Brandenburg State Parliament

In the election on September 14, 2014, Wilke was able to win his constituency with more than 10 percentage points ahead of Michael Möckel, the second-placed direct candidate from the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU). He was one of four directly elected members of the Brandenburg parliamentary group of his party.

Wilke was a member of the parliamentary group's executive committee, initially as an assessor and later as deputy group chairman. He was spokesperson for social, health, care and senior citizens policy until June 6, 2016, when he took on the role of spokesperson for household and finance. René Wilke was deputy chairman of the state parliament's committee for budget and finance and also a member of the committee for internal affairs and local affairs.

Because of his assumption of office as Lord Mayor of Frankfurt, Wilke resigned his state parliament mandate on May 6, 2018. Carsten Preuss moved up for him in the state parliament.

Candidate for Lord Mayor

After Gregor Gysi had already spoken out in favor of Wilke's candidacy for the mayor of Frankfurt in September 2017, he announced his candidacy on October 5, 2017. His candidacy was supported by the Frankfurt Geht Besser list association , which was formed by the parties Die Linke and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen as well as non-party personalities from Frankfurt. The district association of his party elected him unanimously as his candidate for the mayoral election. In December 2017, a joint election meeting of the Frankfurt Geht Besser list unanimously confirmed his nomination. Wilke's candidacy was also supported by the Citizens 'Initiative Urban Redevelopment , the Frankfurt Citizens' Initiative and the PARTY party . René Wilke ran against the incumbent Mayor Martin Wilke (independent), to which it is neither related by marriage related, the two aldermen Markus Derling (CDU) and Jens-Marcel Ullrich ( SPD ) and Wilko Moeller ( AFD ).

On March 4, 2018, Wilke achieved the best result of all candidates in the first round of the mayoral election with 43.4%. He won the runoff election on March 18, 2018 with 62.5%. René Wilke replaced Martin Wilke as the youngest Lord Mayor in Frankfurt's history on May 6, 2018 and became the youngest Lord Mayor of Brandenburg. At the same time, Frankfurt (Oder) is the first city in Brandenburg and the largest city in Germany with a Mayor of the Left.

Term of office as Lord Mayor

René Wilke was sworn in as Lord Mayor on May 6, 2018. His term of office is eight years and therefore ends on May 5, 2026.

In March 2020 he was one of seven Lord Mayors who demanded that the German government create a legal framework to allow municipalities to accept primarily unaccompanied minor refugees on a voluntary basis. Specifically, Wilke suggested accommodating three unaccompanied underage refugees in Frankfurt (Oder). While the proposal found support in the city, it was attacked online for this.
