action

Alice, a journalist in her thirties, travels to France in a car with her friend Mo. Surprisingly, she leaves him in a freeway parking lot and drives on alone. In the evening Alice stages a car accident and asks for accommodation in a small winery with a guesthouse under a false name. The owners are not enthusiastic about their arrival because they wanted to stop operating as a guest. In truth, she is the daughter of the winery owner Judith. Alice was given up for adoption by Judith when she was two years old for engaging in radical left-wing crimes and going underground. In the meantime Judith has built up a middle-class life in Alsace . She married a French man and had two children, a boy and a girl, who are already young. She is involved in a citizens' initiative against GM maize and was recently photographed in this context. Alice got hold of this photo in her German newspaper office and recognized her mother, whose picture she had seen from old wanted posters.

Judith doesn't recognize her daughter until the next few days, and the tensions between Alice and Judith erupt into a loud argument. Alice questions Judith's ideals and accuses Judith of being a criminal. Judith's children will soon find out who the guest really is. Alice receives support and some family life from her half-brother. However, the conflict between mother and daughter is not over yet. Her brother accidentally discovers the mug shots of his mother that Alice brought with her. This tells the whole family the true story of Judith. To raise funds for the radical left organization, Judith took part in a bank robbery and shot a man in the process. Even Judith's husband is now shaken; he thought he knew everything about Judith's past beforehand.

Alice drives back to Germany with her mother, who had previously repaired the car. Judith complies with the daughter's will that she should face the German police. But shortly before the border, Judith is so bad that Alice stops the car. She forgives her mother and leaves her at a border bridge.
