Desert Film GmbH is a German film production company . The managing directors are Stefan Schubert , Björn Vosgerau and Uwe Kolbe . Likewise with desert media GmbH . Stefan Schubert is also one of the two managing partners at Desert Film West GmbH .

History of the company

The desert film production was founded in 1989 in Hamburg by the film producers Stefan Schubert and Ralph Schwingel and the director Lars Becker . In 1998 he founded the Desert Film West in Cologne together with the publisher Hejo Emons . In 2001, Stefan Schubert and Ralph Schwingel founded the company filmtank together with Thomas Tielsch, a production company for the realization of documentaries and non-fiction programs with branches in Stuttgart and Berlin . Since 2003, the desert film production runs together with the Egoli Tossel Film AG the Timebandits film distribution in Potsdam , the u. a. Against the Wall and Kebab Connection brought to German cinemas. Three years later, the production company expanded its Berlin-Brandenburg activities with the establishment of the Desert Film Ost. From 1996 to the end of 2007, Stefan Schubert and Ralph Schwingel were the sole owners of the desert film production. In 2008, long-time employees Uwe Kolbe and Björn Vosgerau were accepted as shareholders in the newly renamed Desert Film GmbH in Hamburg .

The first film made by the desert film production was the documentary Africa around the corner (1990) by Lars Becker. Since then, the company's focus has been on discovering and promoting new talents such as Fatih Akın ( Against the Wall ) or Buket Alakuş ( Another League ) and long-term collaboration with already recognized directors such as Sven Taddicken ( Emmas Glück ) and Anno Saul ( Kebab Connection ) or authors like Ruth Toma ( Solino ) and Jan Berger ( Another League ). The film director, author and actor Fatih Akin is one of the best-known discoveries by Ralph Schwingel and Stefan Schubert. With Sensin, it's you! (1995) the then 22-year-old Fatih Akin made his first short film for the desert film production and caused a sensation with his award-winning feature film debut Short and painless (1998). This was followed by In July (2000), Solino (2002) and finally the Berlinale winner and multiple prize winner Gegen die Wand (2003). Desert Film has produced more than 40 feature and documentary films since it was founded.
