action

Irm Krischka, who works in a laundromat, takes care of her bedridden mother, who is dying of alcoholism. Since she has little address with this, she tries to compensate for her loneliness by calling complete strangers with a disguised child's voice and asking them to tell her a story, always on the grounds that she is either alone or sick. This behavior offers her protection from the harsh reality, which is dominated on the one hand by her mother and on the other by the memory of her dead sister.

One day she meets one of the victims of her calls, Sina Lehmann, and her life gets completely out of control. She befriends her involuntarily, which on the one hand threatens her strange cat-and-mouse game with other people, but on the other hand gives her the prospect of a new life. However, when she suggests that she has the prospect of a job in a library in Dortmund, Irm's fear of loss comes back up and she takes refuge in her call phase.

But she also decides to be present when her mother dies. When she died, she placed a photo of Irm's dead sister on the stretcher as a sign of reconciliation. With this gesture she can finally end her old, bleak life and start all over again.

Reviews

"The study on loneliness and emotional neglect, which is excellently played in the two main roles, never shows an embarrassing foggy show, rather it puts highly sensitive images of women and their dreams to the test."

“If Esther Schweins remains a little pale as a pure-hearted and loving friend, 'The Caller' is above all a great actress film: Valerie Koch plays the role of Irm with a face between childlike innocence and pathological tension and leaves the viewer Irm's metamorphoses From the neglected child to the calculating monster, feeling real and pressing. "

- Leni Höllerer in the Berliner Morgenpost on March 27, 2008

“'The Caller' is a pleasantly sophisticated psychological thriller that pretends to initiate the audience into the worldview of the 'perpetrator'. [...] Director Felix Randau ( Northern Star ) stages the drama with great sensitivity and a few surprising twists. [...] The tension results from the initially unfathomable character of the cold-blooded Irm, who Valerie Koch plays with an almost frightening intensity, not only when she starts to attack the emotions with the child's voice. But Esther Schweins also does her job well as a librarian, who feels rather challenged by Irm's rejection. "

- Volker Behrens in the Hamburger Abendblatt from March 27, 2008

Outstanding Valerie Koch in her escape into infantilized emotionality, in making her injuries transparent. "
