action

Even seven and a half years after the separation, Jakob is still following his childhood sweetheart Marie. While she has meanwhile emigrated to New York and got married, little has changed for him: He continues to work as a salesman in the toy department of a private department store and still lives in his one-room apartment nearby. When Marie suddenly shows up in the department store after all this time, it happened again to him. Her old feelings also sprout when she visits Jakob watering flowers in his neighbour's loft and assumes that he has meanwhile become a successful photographer. Jakob, who only supervises the apartment in the absence of his neighbor, leaves her in the belief and in the hope of reviving their relationship, decides not to clear up the error.

He quickly becomes entangled in a web of white lies and half-truths. With the help of his friend Torsten, who works as a detective in the department store, Jakob revises his vita and provides a past that should make him more successful and adult than he is in reality. His new colleague Lotte and her eleven-year-old son Ben, who temporarily have to leave their apartment after a pipe burst, also support Jakob in his farce after he temporarily lets them live in the loft during construction. As a thank you, they pretend to be Jacob's wife and stepson who are separated from him after Marie thinks that Jacob has a family based on a dedication she discovered by the actual photographer, and they invite Marie to dinner.

At dinner together on the third Advent, the situation escalates when Till Fichte, Jakob's condescending boss, unexpectedly stands at the door and wants to visit Lotte. This turns out not only to be Lotte's affair, but also as Marie's ex-husband. While the desperate Marie escapes the situation, there is a scuffle between Jakob and Till, which Torsten can stop with a stun gun and as a result, they are both released by Fichte. While Lotte ends the affair with Fichte, Jakob runs after Marie into the night. When he is able to catch up with her, they kiss, but Jakob realizes that they have changed over the years and that as a couple neither of them have a second chance. When reality catches up with him, he and Lotte have an argument the morning after, whereupon she moves out.

In conversation with his mother, Jakob realizes that he has now fallen in love with Lotte. When he confesses his love to her on the soccer field, she reacts repulsively and he leaves, discouraged. A short time later he is visited by Ben, who encourages him to make a second attempt, whereupon they work out a plan in which Jakob surprises Lotte in the department store disguised as Santa Claus. Before he can finish his declaration of love, however, Fichte lets his security guards lead him away. Lotte then visits Jakob on his mini golf course, which he has since bought and extensively renovated. They are reconciled with a kiss and celebrate Christmas Eve with their family as well as Torsten and Marie.

Scenes around the department store located in a Hamburg suburb were created in the listed Rudolf Karstadt department store in the historic old town center in Dömitz. The building, which was built next to the church in 1926 and was used as a department store until 1993, has been empty since 2014 after being revitalized in 2009. For the shooting, the building was completely refurbished “with bought and borrowed things”. Around 60 extras support the shoot.

Reviews

The ensemble around leading actor Kostja Ullmann received positive reviews for its play.

Tilmann P. Gangloff described Suddenly It Was Love in his review on Tittelbach.tv as “possibly the most beautiful romantic comedy of the year”. The special quality of the film lies “in its warm-hearted humor, because at least as successful as the implementation and the outstanding work with the four main actors Kostja Ullmann, Julia Hartmann, Johannes Allmayer and Kim Riedle are the small ideas with which author-director André Erkau has spiced up many dialogue scenes. In this film, which is also a lovable homage to friendship, everything is just right: speed, wit, the little slapstick moments ”.

In his review for NDR 1 Radio MV , culture editor Axel Seitz found that “Kostja Ullmann as Jakob, Julia Hartmann as Marie and Kim Riedle as Lotte in their roles” were convincing and summed up: “The story does not hold any big surprises . Suddenly it was love is like a mulled wine at the Christmas market that tastes good but lacks the shot of rum and the necessary temperature. This light Christmas comedy is pretty to look at. But she lacks the final whistle for the Christmas classic ”.

Hans Czerny from Weser-Kurier found that the “feel-good comedy” was “having a hard time getting going”. A "certain kitsch" will not let in the light of the history indeed "simply bypass so" and Erkau try at least, "the feeling of duty because of front" to address and tackle "the bull by the horns," but of a sudden it was love was All in all, nothing more than "a story that tries to escape the usual prosperity Christmas clichés in a sympathetic way, but which ends up somewhere between Hollywood and the usual Lilly Schönauer heartache".

At first glance, the title Suddenly it was love also seems to hide a pre-Christmas film knitted in the usual pattern. But that's not true, or at least not entirely, ”wrote Marie-Luise Braun in her review for the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung . “Here and there, humor flares up without the usual club. It even feels like irony when Kostja Ullmann as the confused Jakob and Kim Riedle as Lotte who has become cynical through love experiences ". The production is "a romantic comedy with little kitsch".
