The Essonne is a river that runs in the central area of France . It rises in the Gâtinais , in the municipality of Chilleurs-aux-Bois . The source is on the northwest flank of the Ingrannes massif , at a height of 130 meters. The source stream is often referred to by the name Œuf . Both names go back to the old Celtic goddess Acionna , whose cult is proven here in Gallo-Roman times .
The river initially drains towards the northeast, later turns to the north and finally flows into the Seine after 97 kilometers, just south-east of Paris, in Corbeil-Essonnes as a left tributary .
On its way, the Essonne flows through the Gâtinais français Regional Nature Park . She is also the namesake for the Essonne department .
