Eugen Klimsch
Eugen Johann Georg Klimsch (born November 29, 1839 in Frankfurt am Main ; † July 9, 1896 there ) was a German painter and illustrator. He came from the Klimsch family of artists and entrepreneurs in Frankfurt .
family
Eugen Johann Georg Klimsch came from a Frankfurt artist and entrepreneurial family. He was the eldest son of the artist Ferdinand Karl Klimsch and Margaretha Henriette Schulz. The artists Karl Ferdinand Klimsch and Ludwig Klimsch were his brothers. On October 7, 1865, in Frankfurt am Main, he married Anna Helena Burkhard, the older sister of his brother Karl Ferdinand's wife. They had four children together:
- Karl (January 15, 1867 - 1936)
- Paul (June 15, 1868 - June 4, 1917)
- Fritz (February 10, 1870 - March 30, 1960)
- Maria Louise (born August 28, 1873)
Beginnings and training
His father introduced him to painting techniques as a child and promoted his talent. Later, Eugen Johann attended the Höhere Gewerbeschule from 1852 to 1855 and then the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main until 1859 . He then studied from 1860 to 1865 at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under Professor Andreas Müller , the so-called "composer miller ". Müller awakened Eugen Johann Klimsch's interest in working as an illustrator and graphic artist, as numerous works from this period prove. During his time in Munich, for example, he designed diploma certificates, decorative place cards, but also banknotes and advertising posters. From 1895 to 1897 he was a student of René Reinicke .
Act
After completing his studies, he returned to Frankfurt in 1865, where he taught at the local arts and crafts school. He also took on commissioned work for the artistic design of private villas, cafes and public buildings. The Great Hall of the Frankfurt Palmengarten and various dining rooms of the passenger ships of the Bremer Lloyd Reederei were decorated with allegorical representations by Johann Eugen Klimsch . Klimsch mainly painted in the style of the old masters. He mastered the styles of Dutch painting of the 17th century, the French Rococo and Empire . However, he achieved his greatest successes as an illustrator of children's and fairy tale books, as well as classic works such as Goethe's “Poetry and Truth” , published in the fifth edition by the Deutsche Verlagsanstalt in Stuttgart . In 1889 he was given the title of professor . Klimsch also painted miniatures on parchment , for which he was awarded in Karlsruhe in 1891 and in Chicago in 1893 . In 1895, until his death in 1896, he took over the management of the Städel'schen painting school in Frankfurt am Main.
