As early as 1952, the first considerations were made to found a bank for church and diakonia for Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg . The background to these considerations was the clear need for a loan to resolve urgent structural emergencies that arose as a result of destruction in the Second World War and as a result of immigration. After years of internal church discussion process, the then founded the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Schleswig-Holstein , the former Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lübeck , the deaneries Rendsburg , Segeberg , Stormarn and Südtondern, the parish associations Ottensen and Neumünster , the parishes Borby , Heath , Niebüll - Deezbüll , Segeberg and Wohltorf-Ohlstedt as well as the regional association of the Inner Mission in Schleswig-Holstein and the Evangelical Diakonissenanstalt Bethanien in Kropp the Evangelical Loan Cooperative for Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg on February 9, 1968 in the meeting room of the regional church office in Kiel.

The private customer business was added to the range of services of the church bank in 1976. The EDG Advisory Board, whose task is to give the board of directors suggestions and recommendations on business policy, was founded in 1978. In 1980 the company moved to new business premises in the Sophienblatt 78 property. In 1990, the longstanding relationship with the then West area of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg, which included West Berlin , was deepened by opening a branch of its own. The first business premises were located in the consistory at Bachstrasse 1–2; today the branch is located in the Evangelical Center in Friedrichshain .

In 1997, the headquarters in Kiel moved to the new premises at Herzog-Friedrich-Straße 45 in the Kiel suburb , where they had their headquarters until the end.
