history

Choir of the old St. Martin's Church

In 822, Meckesheim was first mentioned in a document in the Lorsch Codex . The St. Martin's Church above the settlement existed very early and was probably one of the oldest churches in the Elsenz Valley . It was the mother parish of Zuzenhausen , Mauer and Mönchzell . In 1330 the village of Meckesheim came to the Count Palatine near the Rhine . In 1496 the church was described in the Worms Synodale , a visit report of the parishes in the diocese of Worms . In addition to St. Martin's Church, there was also a Marienkapelle in Meckesheim at that time. In 1556, Elector Ottheinrich introduced the Reformation in the Electoral Palatinate . It was probably the impetus for the chapel to become a parish church in the village , the old St. Martin's church fell into disrepair over time.

When the Palatinate church was divided in 1706, the church was initially assigned to the few Catholics. However, an exchange with Zuzenhausen took place immediately, so that the Meckesheim church remained reformed . There was a fire in 1722, after which the church was poorly restored. In the middle of the 19th century the dilapidated church had become too small so that it had to give way to a new building.

The foundation stone of today's church was laid in 1847 and it was consecrated two years later. The architect was Ludwig Lendorff , a student of Heinrich Huebsch , from the Grand Ducal Baden Building Directorate in Heidelberg. The sandstone for the church comes from Eppingen-Mühlbach . In 1890 the interior was decorated with ornaments. During the renovation in 1954, it was given a simple lime paint. In 1982 the interior was restored and the original painting restored. The exterior was renovated in 1995.

In 2008 a biblical garden was laid out around the church , in which plants are presented with corresponding Bible passages or other explanations.

architecture

inner space

The church stands in the historic center east of Elsenz. During the previous building still faces east , was the present church in 1849 was aware of the North-South direction rotated and retracted Tower set with his eight-pointed hood to the main road. The three-aisled church has a choir with a 5/8 end . It is an early example of the neo-Gothic pointed arch style , which replaced the round arch style in the 19th century . On the side of the nave it is structured with buttresses. The two-story gallery inside can be seen from the two rows of windows outside. The central nave closes with a raised beam ceiling, the side aisles have flat ceilings. Vaults are stretched over the choir and vestibule.

The interior is painted ornamentally. On the arch of the choir is the Bible word “Jesus Christ yesterday and today and the same forever”, in a blind window in the western choir “He who believes and is baptized will be saved” and opposite “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life ”. The choir vault is painted with a blue sky with gold stars.

Furnishing

The altar and pulpit are made of wood and were designed by architect Lendorff. The stone font is also part of the original equipment , while the ambo was only purchased in 1982. The three windows in the choir were designed in 1889 by an unknown artist in the late Nazarene style . The middle one shows Jesus in prayer and the sleeping disciples in the garden of Gethsemane . The flanking windows show Martin Luther on the left and Philipp Melanchthon on the right .

organ

organ

The organ was built in 1773/74 by Andreas Krämer for the garrison church in Mannheim. After this church was demolished in 1782, the Meckesheim community bought the instrument at auction in 1805 and had it refurbished by Anton Overmann . For the new church, the instrument was rebuilt in 1849 by Louis Voit , Heinrich Voit's father , and received its current case according to plans by the architect Lendorff. Walcker carried out another renovation in 1937. In 1984 the organ was completely renovated by Peter Vier . The instrument has 25 stops on two manuals and a pedal .

Bells

As with the building of the church, the chiming consists of three bells . After a bell was damaged in 1900, all three bronze bells were cast at Andreas Hamm Sohn in Frankenthal. The large and small bells had to be given in during the First World War, whereby the bells were not completely removed from the tower, but were smashed in the bell tower. The delivered bells were replaced in 1922, but had to be delivered again during World War II. After the war the bell was completed again.
