Evangelical Church of Gröditz

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Gröditz is a listed church building in the small town of Gröditz in the Saxon district of Meißen . The neo-Romanesque style church can be found here, surrounded by the church cemetery in the center of the village.

Building history

Gröditz was originally parish in the neighboring Frauenhain , where one of the oldest church locations in the immediate vicinity is located. The oldest parts of the Frauenhain church are said to date back to the 13th century . At that time, the Bishop of Naumburg owned a mansion on the site of what would later become the Frauenhain Castle, which he used as accommodation in the region.

The Protestant Church around 1955

The village of Gröditz, which once belonged to the Saathain rulership , developed into an industrial location through the settlement of Einsiedel's iron hammer in 1779. The place experienced great population growth. Between the years 1848 and 1890 alone, the local population increased more than fivefold. It became necessary to have its own church in the village, and the structure that still exists today was built in 1890 and 1891. Theodor Quentin (1851–1905) is given as the master builder . The architect is considered stylistically as representatives of the Gothic Revival . During his lifetime he made a name for himself in the area of sacred architecture, especially in Saxony and Thuringia .

The building was opened on December 14th, 1891. The construction costs for the Gröditz church came to 35,854 Reichsmarks .

In 1950 the interior of the church was changed. In addition, an extensive renovation of the building was carried out, in the course of which, among other things, the painting of the interior was changed and damaged windows were replaced. Furthermore, the church got an electric heating, which replaced the originally existing stoves. In 1990 extensive restoration work was carried out on the building. Further renovation work in the outdoor area was carried out in 2014.

Furnishing

A large wrought iron chandelier can be found as a defining element in the interior of the church . The sacred building is equipped with a three-part stone altar with a central group of wooden figures. This group of figures depicts Jesus on the cross and a family in an adoring posture. Furthermore, a wooden pulpit and a baptismal font can be found in the church . Both come from the Meißner carpentry and are a foundation of the Kommerzienrat Ludwig Albert Julius Niethammer (1833–1908), who founded the Gröditzer pulp mill in 1883 .

Tombs and memorials

The church cemetery is immediately adjacent to the Gröditzer church. The cemetery offers space for around 700 grave sites. Of these, around 180 are currently occupied.

On the opposite side of the street from the building you can find the Central Monument Square, where a memorial is erected, which commemorates the inhabitants of the place who died in the two world wars. In 1994 the square was redesigned.

In the summer of 2016, a community grave was created in the form of a roundabout with a diameter of ten meters in the neighboring church cemetery. The parish had invested around 6,500 euros in the facility, the outer circle of which is made of granite stones.
