Saint-André church

Exmes is a village and a former French commune of 290 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Orne in the region of Normandy . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Argentan and the Canton of Argentan-2 .

With effect from January 1, 2017, the previous municipalities of Silly-en-Gouffern , Aubry-en-Exmes , Avernes-sous-Exmes , Le Bourg-Saint-Léonard , Chambois , La Cochère , Courménil , Fel , Omméel , Saint-Pierre -la-Rivière , Exmes , Survie , Urou-et-Crennes , Villebadin have merged to form a commune nouvelle called Gouffern en Auge and have the status of a commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Silly-en-Gouffern.

geography

Exmes is 15 kilometers northeast of Argentan . The rivers Dives and Barges flow through the former municipality.

history

At the time of the Merovingians , Exmes was an important city of Neustria (511–737) and the seat of governor . In 869 the castle of Exmes was taken by the Normans. In 1449 it was taken by the English .

During the Second World War (1939-1945) Exmes was liberated by the French 2nd Panzer Division on August 19, 1944.

In 1811 the parishes of Chaufour and Saint-Arnoult were incorporated. Chaufour had 37 inhabitants in 1806 and Saint-Arnoult 76. Exmes had most of the inhabitants in 1836 (805), after which the population declined.

Attractions

The Château de Saint-Arnoult is privately owned. It was built in the 18th century.

The ruins of a medieval castle are in the Le Château district above the town center. The ruins are classified as Monument historique (historical monument). The donjon was built between 1182 and 1190 . In 1605 the castle was razed. The stones were used to build the Notre-Dame-des-Loges priory . Between 1879 and 1889, a chapel dedicated to St. Chrodegang was built on the top of the mountain on which the castle was built .

The Romanesque church of St André dates from the 11th century and contains the furniture of the priory, which is now only a ruin. The church is the oldest church in Normandy.

economy

Important occupations of the Hiémois (residents) are agriculture ( breeding of domestic cattle and domestic horses ), trade, transport and public administration.

Personalities

François Le Prévost d'Exmes (1729–1799) was a French writer who was born in Exmes.
