particularities Rubble

The Föhrenbuck (also called Hafenberg or Schuttberg ) is a mountain of rubble in the south of the city of Nuremberg , Bavaria .

geography

The Föhrenbuck is located directly east of the Bayern port of Nuremberg . He is with a height of 369  m above sea level. NN today next to the inconspicuous Glasersberg ( 380  m ) and the Worzeldorfer Berg ( 387  m ) the third highest hill in the south of Nuremberg. However, with a gap height of 60 m, it has the greater dominance. After the Schmausenbuck ( 390  m ), it is the fourth highest point in the entire city .

history

Until the early 20th century, the area in the Eibacher Forest , which belongs to the Lorenzer Reichswald , was called Wolfsgrube and Untere Vogelheerd . The area was covered with coniferous forest and was completely flat in an ancient valley of the Pegnitz . In the building boom of the 1900s, the local sand deposits began to be exploited, which benefited the new urban districts emerging just a few kilometers to the north. The pits were filled with household waste during the First World War , and new sand pits were opened immediately to the south . From 1943 onwards, the landfills were continuously covered with war rubble that fell from the air raids on Nuremberg . In the post-war period , large amounts of war rubble continued to be piled up there. In the 1950s and 1960s, around 370,000 m³ of additional household and industrial waste as well as excavation were added annually until the landfill located immediately to the south was set up. At the end of the 1960s the capacity of the site was exhausted, around 1970 the rubble was covered with the excavated material that arose during the construction of the Main-Danube Canal and reached its final height of 369 m. In the 1980s the area was renatured and the abandoned sand pits south of the landfill that had remained unfilled were designated as a nature reserve Sandgruben am Föhrenbuck in 1992 .

Problems

Since the cover of the landfill mountain with excavated material is only very small in some places, rainwater always penetrates into it, which leads to pollution of the groundwater flowing off in the deeper layers of the Urtal. The younger, south-facing landfill has already been rehabilitated with seals and extensive covers. The pollution, like those at the other Nuremberg landfills, is monitored regularly.

Others

The area is freely accessible all year round at any time of the day or night and, thanks to its exposed location, offers a splendid view of the port area in the west, in the north over the Nuremberg old town to the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg , in the east to the Moritzberg and in clear weather Dillberg on the edge of the Upper Palatinate and in the south to Heidenberg .

  • In 2009, a cyclist died on Föhrenbuck when she fell while going downhill.
  • In 2015, a bush fire broke out that destroyed around 900 m² of forest before it could be contained.

traffic

The Föhrenbuck can only be reached from the south, west and north on foot, by bike or by boat. From the east there is an access option (only for authorized persons) from the district road N 1 .

The VGN has been serving the Föhrenbuck stop on demand since the 1980s . Nobody lives there, but excursions, hikers and allotment gardeners benefit from the Königshof allotment garden colony to the east .
