The 1. FC Viersen 05 e. V. is a football club in the district town of Viersen on the Lower Rhine ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

history

The club was founded on June 27, 1969 through the merger of the two local rivals VfL Grün-Weiß Viersen and FC Germania Viersen . If VfL was always the higher class club (until 1959 in the top amateur league), while FC Germania, on the other hand, played predominantly in the lower district leagues, both clubs met in the district league from 1967. In order to be able to play together in a higher class again, the merger was decided.

In fact, the merger showed sporting success. In 1972 the club rose to the third-class amateur league Niederrhein. After the prompt relegation, he returned to the Niederrhein amateur league in 1975. They played very successfully there for three years and were therefore able to qualify for the amateur league North Rhine , founded in 1978 . However, this new league was initially too difficult for the footballers, and there was immediate relegation to the association league in 1979. But a year later, the rise succeeded: From 1980 to 1982 one belonged again to the amateur league of North Rhine. Relegation was followed by his return as champion of the Niederrhein Association League in 1983. From that year on they belonged to the amateur league until 1992 and were able to place themselves twice in the front table area in 1985 as 8th and 1990 9th. During this time, an average of 647 (1986/87) and 1,018 (1984/85) viewers watched the home games of 1. FC Viersen 05.

After the third relegation from the amateur league succeeded only once for one season (1994/95) the return. Since then, the club has been playing in lower leagues, now only in the sixth class national league. For the 2005/06 season, however, succeeded in returning to the Niederrhein Association League (from 2008 to 2012 Niederrheinliga), in which they competed for the next seven years. In March 2012, the voluntary withdrawal into the national league for the 2012/13 season was announced.

1. FC Viersen 05 have made it to the main round of the DFB Cup twice . In 1978 they were eliminated from the then German champions Borussia Mönchengladbach in the first main round with 0: 8 goals. In 1981, the then first division club Karlsruher SC was the final destination in the same round . After the first leg was still tied 2-2 after extra time, the replay was only just lost with 1: 2.
