Fabio Betancur Tirado

Fabio Betancur Tirado (born October 30, 1938 in Armenia , Antioquia ; † November 20, 2011 in Medellín , Antioquia) was a Colombian clergyman and theologian . He was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Manizales .

Life

Fabio Betancur Tirado was the oldest of eight children in a religious family. His parents were Heriberto Betancur and Rosa Tirado. He attended high school , minor seminary, and seminary in Medellín. On September 6, 1964, the then Archbishop of Medellín Tulio Botero Salazar ordained him as a priest . In 1964 he became a professor at the seminary of Medellín, from 1965 to 1970 he was its rector. From 1971 to 1974 he was rector of the Minor Seminary, then from 1977 to 1979 professor at the Pontifical University of Bolivariana .

On 24 May 1982 Pope appointed him John Paul II. To the titular of Sereddeli and auxiliary bishop in Medellin . The Archbishop of Medellín, Alfonso López Trujillo , ordained him episcopal on July 3 of the same year. Co- consecrators were Hernando Velásquez Lotero , Bishop of Facatativá , and Rodrigo Arango Velásquez PSS , Auxiliary Bishop in Medellín.

On March 29, 1984 he was appointed the first bishop of the newly established diocese of La Dorada-Guaduas . He took office on June 16, 1984. On October 15, 1996 he was appointed by John Paul II to succeed José de Jesús Pimiento Rodriguez as Archbishop of Manizales , which he took up on November 30. From December 13, 2003 to January 30, 2004 he was also administrator of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe de Antioquia .

Act

He caused controversy when he excommunicated the mayor of Manizales after he refused to take action against an erotic fair taking place in the city.

Fabio Betancur Tirado was chairman of the board of trustees of the "Pontifical Foundation Populorum Progressio", which Pope John Paul II had founded to promote more human life and the Christian dignity of the indigenous people and agricultural workers in Latin America. In 2009 the Pontifical Board of Trustees met at the invitation of Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes in Arnsberg-Neheim .

On the 16th anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady in the parish of Medjugorje in 1984, he visited the pilgrimage site of Medjugorje .
