The holy Fara , also Burgundofara , Old High German "die Fahrende", (* 595 in Poincy , † April 3rd around 656 in Faremoutiers ) was a monastery founder and abbess . She is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church and called on as a helper for eye problems. Her feast day is December 7th .

Life

Fara came from the Frankish noble family of the Burgundofarones , who were probably of Burgundian origin and had property in the east of Paris, in the vicinity of Meaux . Her father was Chagnerich , a close confidante of King Theudebert II , her mother's name was Leudegund. According to tradition, St. Columban of Luxeuil was a guest in the family home in 610 and blessed Fara and her brothers and sisters when they parted. When her father wanted to marry her, she resisted and stated that she wanted to lead a monastic life. Since the father did not want to give in to her wish, Fara fell seriously ill and went blind. It was only through the blessing of St. Eustasius , a disciple of Columban, that she was recovered.

After all, Fara was allowed to take the religious vows around the year 614 . Her father allowed her to build a monastery in the place Eboriacum , at the confluence of the Aubetin and Grand Morin streams , where she became abbess . The monastery initially followed the strict rule of St. Columban, later the Benedictine rule was introduced. Fara died around 656 in the monastery, which was later named Faremoutiers ( Farae monasterium ) after her , and was buried there. When her bones were exposed for worship in 1622, a blind nun is said to have regained her eyesight through contact with the relics . The monastery was largely destroyed during the French Revolution .
