The Farnsberg is 786  m above sea level. NHN high mountain of the Rhön . It belongs to the Black Mountains ridge and is located near Bad Brückenau in the Bavarian district of Bad Kissingen .

The Farnsberg rises in the Bavarian Rhön Nature Park and in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve . Its peak is 2.6 km east-southeast of Riedberger core local and 2.8 km southeast of the hamlet Riedberger Neufriedrichsthal and 3.9 km south-southwest of Oberbach , 6.5 km west-northwest of Gefäll , 3.8 km to the north of the valley of the upper Thulba located Geroda and 3.6 km northeast of Schildeck . The border between Riedenberg and Geroda runs about 300 m southeast of the summit.

The Farnsberg is bordered to the north by the Mittelbach and to the southwest by the Trockenbach , two tributaries of the Sinn ; the landscape slopes west-northwest to this river. The landscape leads north-west to the Barstones ( 678  m ). In the transition area to this elevation is the lake inkwell in a former basalt quarry . To the east, the landscape leads over with a small notch to Berg Höhe ( 834  m ). The Steinerne Meer spreads out on the southwest slope , a small sea of ​​rocks made of basalt blocks. The neighboring elevation to the southwest is the Knörzchen ( 643  m ).

The Farnsberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35), in the main unit Hohe Rhön (354) and in the subunit Südliche Hochrhön (354.0) to the natural area Black Mountains (354.01) and lies roughly in its center.

Protected areas

Parts of the Black Mountains nature reserve ( CDDA no. 64699; designated 1993; 31.7067 km² in size), the Bavarian Rhön landscape reserve  (CDDA no. 396113; 959.8027 km²), the fauna and flora habitat are located on the Farnsberg . Area Bayerische Hohe Rhön (FFH-Nr. 5526-371; 192.6059 km²) and the bird sanctuary Bayerische Hohe Rhön (VSG-Nr. 5526-471; 190.2908 km²).

Facilities

The Würzbürger Karl-Straub-Haus (Würzburger Haus) stands on the transition area from the Farnsberg to the height to the east, the Berghaus Rhön on the western slope and a Friends of Nature House with the Farnsberg youth campground on the transition area to the northwestern Barsteinen . There is a ski lift at the Berghaus Rhön ; its piste is 400 m long and has an altitude difference of 60 m (786 to 726  m ).

Transport links and hiking

There are no roads leading to the summit region of the Farnsberg. However branches northeast of Riedenberg from the national road 2289 , the lake road from that for standing on the western slopes Berghaus Rhön runs; there are parking spaces for hikers . The Kreuzbergweg leads over the area of ​​the south-east slope near the summit and past the Würzburger Karl-Straub-Haus .
