The Thulba is a 27 km long, right or northern tributary of the Franconian Saale .

Surname

The name "Thulba" is derived from the Indo-European word dulbo , which means to dig, to hollow out. The river gave the municipality of Oberthulba and Thulba their names.

course

The Thulba arises south of the Black Mountains and north of the village of Geroda in an area characterized by forest and meadow areas. After its source streams have united south of the Obermühle, the Thulba takes on its direction of flow, which is generally oriented to the southwest. Below the monastery mill, it reaches Geroda, where there are two more mills and the Sembach flows from the right. You pass the Ruckmühle, northwest of Birkenfeld a small sewage treatment plant and south of it the Festersbrunnen . The Thulba now meanders through a deeply cut valley. At Burkardroth- Oehrberg, it used to drive the Oehrbachsmühle. In this section the Thulba is also called Oehrbach . After passing another sewage treatment plant south of Oehrberg, the Oehrbachtal narrows significantly. Coming from the right, the Thülbingsbach flows northwest of Oberthulba -Hassenbach, which flows around it to the south. This is followed by the nut mill, the new mill and the joiner's mill, where the Thulba reaches the eastern outskirts of Oberthulba. Its water flow is reinforced there by the approximately 9.1 km long Lauter coming from the left , the western direction of which the Thulba takes up south of the village for a few kilometers up to the crossing European route 45 . Below the Reithermühle northwest of Thulba (district of Oberthulba), the Heeggraben and the Laibach flow from the right, and the (temporarily dry) Heinergraben at a small lake with a campsite. Below the Obere Erthals-Mühle it is reached on the left from the last parallel Rumbach. South of Obererthal (district of Hammelburg ), the Mühlgraben , which flows back into the Thulba at Herberts-Mühle near Untererthal ( Hammelburg ), branches off into which the Elsengraben flows. Below the Kessenmühle, the Thulba flows into the Franconian Saale near the sewage treatment plant in the west of Hammelburg.

nature and environment

Water quality

The Thulba is a body of water whose biological water quality ( saprobia ) is classified as moderately polluted ( water quality class II) (2001). The upper course is in a natural state, in the lower course, on the other hand, some flowing stretches and floodplain sections are impaired.

Creature

Demoiselle

The Thulbatal is widely extended Hochstaudenfluren , moist mowing, and wet meadows dominated and is home to high-quality habitats . On the mountain slopes, which are often rich in limestone, there are valuable dry sites and forests with old hardwood stocks (especially alder ). The floodplain areas along the meandering Thulba provide habitat for many animal and plant species .

fauna

The areas of the Thulba floodplain near the banks are also the habitat for typical insects - and bird species such as the demoiselle , marsh insect and kingfisher . Grayling , brook trout , brook lamprey , brook loach , barbel , minnow , perch , gudgeon , hazel , Mühlkoppe , nose , rainbow trout and roach can be found in the Thulba, as well as rare crabs .

Forest cranesbill

flora

The moist meadow areas and the dry, calcareous mountain slopes are the location of specialized plant species such as:
