Life

Origin and family

Steinfurt House

Ferdinand Wilhelm grew up as the son of Johann Matthias von der Recke zu Steinfurt and his wife Anna Maria von Plettenberg zu Lehnhausen together with his brother Johann Friedrich Christian and his half-siblings Anna Maria Theresia , Franz Arnold and Anna Maria Theresia (Abbess of Nottuln Abbey ) in the ancient Westphalian noble family von der Recke . On June 24, 1732, he married Sophia Maria Josina von Kerckerinck zu Borg (1710–1751). The daughters Maria Bernhardine (1733–1784 ∞ Clemens August I. von Droste zu Hülshoff , grandparents of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff ) and Clara Franziska († 1798, ∞ Franz Ludolf von Oer) emerged from the marriage . There were no male offspring.

Career and work

With the receipt of the tonsure on March 5, 1721 Ferdinand Wilhelm was prepared for a clerical office. With the abandonment of his brother Johann Friedrich Christian on his Münsterische Dompräbende in 1725 it was transferred to him. He enrolled at the University of Orléans and became head of the budget department in 1726. The revolt to the knighthood of the Münster took place on December 28, 1733. His appointment as a chamberlain fell on May 27, 1735. On February 1, 1738 he became a real secret council in Munster and in Kurköln . From 1738 to 1747 he was the representative of Elector Clemens August with the administration of the county of Bentheim . His appointment as Drosten des Amt Werne fell on December 5, 1739. He remained in this position until he was replaced by Adrian Wilhelm Franz von Nagel zu Itlingen on November 23, 1754. Because he married against his father's will and led a lavish lifestyle , he was disinherited in 1737 and the inheritance was given to his half-brother Franz Arnold. After his father's death in 1739, he had the disinheritance judicially reviewed with the result that the Reich Chamber of Commerce awarded him 2/3 of the Steinfurt property and Franz Arnold 1/3 of the property.
