Fernand you Martheray
Fernand du Martheray (more rarely Ferdinand du Martheray or Fernand Dumartheray ; * July 16, 1860 in Rolle VD ; † May 22, 1910 in Vienna ) was a Swiss diplomat .
Life
Martheray came from an aristocratic family from Geneva and was the son of the canton judge Eugene Dumartheray. He attended high school in Lausanne and, in order to deepen his German language skills, also in Burgdorf . After Martheray, grandson of Rodolphe Soutter , had successfully completed high school, he went to Geneva for a year to study natural sciences under Carl Vogt . In 1881 the young Martheray joined the Swiss Zofinger Association in Geneva . He broke off his studies in natural sciences in Geneva, decided to realign his studies and studied law at the Free School of Political Science in Paris , where he obtained his licentiate in 1885 . After his stay in France , he continued his studies in Germany at the University of Greifswald and the Humboldt University in Berlin in order to further deepen his knowledge of law. In Germany he attended, among other things, the events of Heinrich Dernburgs . In 1888 Martheray studied in England for a year to complete his training as a future diplomat.
Diplomatic service
The trained lawyer joined the Swiss diplomatic service in 1889, initially as a legation attaché at the headquarters of the Federal Political Department (EPD). He was thus one of the first diplomats to emerge from that famous " Droz School ". In Bern he dealt among other things with the dossier " Affäre Wohlgemuth ". In 1890 Martheray was transferred to Vienna, where a year later he was promoted to legation secretary. In the absence of the Swiss ambassador, Alfred de Claparède , Martheray was provisionally appointed chargé d'affaires ad interim in Vienna between 1893 and 1894 . Finally in 1897 he was promoted to the Legation Council . Together with Alfred de Claparède, he coordinated the transfer of the remains of Empress Elisabeth from Austria-Hungary to Vienna. In 1901 the EPD sent Martheray to Rome , where he acted as the unofficial Swiss representative under the direction of the Belgian envoy during the brief dissolution of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Italy (" Silvestrelli affairs ").
When diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Italy were resumed, the posts of the Swiss embassies were cast around . Martheray was named Swiss envoy to Washington after first candidate Charles-Daniel Bourcart turned down his appointment for the post. In the United States , Martheray did a remarkable job and managed to develop a personal relationship with the President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt . In 1904 the Federal Councilor appointed Martheray as Swiss envoy in Vienna, at the same time he was accredited in Serbia and Bulgaria . Given his privileged position in the United States, he expected to be able to negotiate the trade agreement between Switzerland, Serbia and Bulgaria, but it did not materialize. During his stay in Austria-Hungary his nervous disorders worsened and he died of a stroke in 1910 .
Others
Fernand du Martheray was the first representative of his family to change the name "Dumartheray" to "Du Martheray". To do this, he had to fight a lawsuit, which he eventually won.
