history

Although East Timor is part of Asia , it also has ethnic groups that speak Papuan languages, which is why it also maintains relationships with the Melanesian and Pacific world. As an observer, East Timor participated in the third ACP Summit in July 2002 and, since August 2002, in the annual meetings of the heads of state and government of the Pacific Islands Forum . In 2016, the country joined the Pacific Islands Development Forum . East Timor has had observer status with the Melanesian Spearhead Group since 2010 .

Fiji participated with staff in the United Nations Interim Administration for East Timor (UNTAET) and other organizations in East Timor. Esala Teleni , Fiji's ambassador to East Timor since 2016, was himself a member of the Peace Keeping Forces (PKF).

In 2017, Fiji and East Timor signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Fiji National University (FNU) to work with the East Timorese Ministry of Health . East Timorese are to be trained as medical personnel in Fiji.

In 2019, Premila Kumar , Fiji's Minister for Tourism, Trade, Industry, Local Government and Community Development visited East Timor.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 2003.

The High Commissioner in Port Moresby , the capital of Papua New Guinea, is also accredited for East Timor.

The Ambassador of East Timor in Canberra , Australia is also accredited for Fiji.

economy

According to the East Timor’s Statistical Office , Fiji exported goods worth 429,000 US dollars (2016: 2,347,000 US dollars) to East Timor in 2018. It was in 27th place (2016: 16th place) in the list of importers for East Timor. There were also re-exports from East Timor to Fiji amounting to 8,000 US dollars (27th place).
