Vanuatu's Prime Minister Charlot Salwai visits East Timor's Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak (2019)

Prime Minister Vanuatus campaigned for the independence of the small Southeast Asian country during the Indonesian occupation of East Timor (1975-1999). For this, Prime Minister Barak Sopé , the politician Hilda Lini and the diplomat Robert Van Lierop received the Ordem de Timor-Leste and Prime Minister Walter Hadye Lini posthumously the Ordem de Laran Luak . On August 31, 2019, East Timor's President Francisco Guterres also awarded the Vanuatu government the Ordem de Timor-Leste. East Timor's former President Xanana Gusmão is a holder of the Vanuatu First Class Order.

Vanuatu participated with police personnel in the United Nations Interim Administration for East Timor (UNTAET), the United Nations Assistance Mission in East Timor (UNMISET) and the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT).

In 2015, after cyclone Pam , East Timor offered Vanuatu support to rebuild.

In 2018 Xanana Gusmão visited Vanuatu again. The topic of the discussions was the drawing of maritime boundaries. East Timor had been able to settle border disputes with Australia in its favor. Vanuatu would like to share its experiences with France over the Matthew and Hunter Islands .

Although East Timor is part of Asia , it also has ethnic groups that speak Papuan languages, which is why it also maintains relationships with the Melanesian and Pacific world. As an observer, East Timor participated in the third ACP Summit in July 2002 and, since August 2002, in the annual meetings of the heads of state and government of the Pacific Islands Forum . In 2016, the country joined the Pacific Islands Development Forum . Since 2010, East Timor has had observer status with the Melanesian Spearhead Group , which is based in the Vanuatu capital Port Vila .

The two states have no diplomatic representation in the other country.
