action
For years the plague in Venice has struck those who could not renounce debauchery, but now it is over. The young Giulio comes to town, who immediately appeals to women and seeks adventure. On the street, his eyes meet those of Valeria, whom he is running after. She initially rejects him, but then sends her stupid maid Oria to find him and invite him. Oria finds him and tells him to be in front of Valeria's house at midnight, where he may be admitted.
But the young widow Angela, who has inherited an immense fortune that she would lose if she devoted herself to other men, has her eye on Giulio. In order not to have to be content with caresses with her maid Nena, she promises high reward to the gondolier Bernardo if he tracks down Giulio and guides him to her. Bernardo finds the languidly waiting youth and praises Angela as the most beautiful woman in Venice. And Giulio gives up the uncertain meeting with Valeria in favor of the promised one with Angela and gets into the gondola. He and Angela spend the night under mutual profound affirmations of love, while Bernardo and Nena in the room overheard everything and do it together. In the morning Angela gives the traveler a precious necklace to say goodbye. Back on the street, Oria leads him to her mistress, who is desperate that he did not come to her that night. Only pleased about his late arrival, she recognizes by the necklace that he has been to Angela and chases him angrily away. But immediately Valeria recognizes her outburst as a mistake and looks for him disguised as a man on the streets until they embrace. They amuse themselves in Valeria's bedchamber until her husband approaches and Giulio can slip away at the last moment. He throws stones at Angela's window now, but she draws the curtains. So Giulio leaves the city, whose people he praises like the meetings with them.
