Filomeno Pedro Cabral Fernandes

Filomeno Pedro Cabral Fernandes (born May 3, 1955 in Dili , Portuguese Timor ; † April 21, 2020 in Dili, East Timor ), fighting name Manu Meno , was an East Timorese local politician, football player and football official.

Fernandes was a player for Sport Dili e Benfica during the Portuguese colonial era , although his uncle co-founded the clubs Clubo União and Clubo Morçegos. The uncle, Filomeno and his father Joaquim Jacob dos Reis Fernandes were political prisoners of FRETILIN from 1975 as a result of the civil war . While Filomeno was a supporter of the UDT , his father was one of the leaders of the APODETI . In 1975 they witnessed the FRETILIN massacre of 22 prisoners in Aileu . In the course of the Indonesian invasion , the Fernandes were relocated several times by FRETILIN until they were released in Quelicai in 1977 . Filomeno joined the Timor Timur Province Information Service (Dinas Penerangan Propinsi Timor Timur) and continued playing football in Dili.

In 1980 Fernandes became Liurai of Uma Caduac . After ten years he gave up the office and became a member of the Regional People's Assembly (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah, DPRD) of Manatuto . Since 1980 Fernandes has also secretly supported the resistance against the Indonesians .

Fernandes is considered to be one of the founders of the Federação Futebol Timor-Leste (FFTL) 2000, of which he became the first vice-president. He was also an advisor to the State Secretariat for Youth and Sport . He was also involved in the founding of the Sport Laulara e Benfica club and the Liga Futebol Amadora (LFA) in 2015.

In 2001 Fernandes ran unsuccessfully in 67th place in the Partido Democrático (PD).

Fernandes last lived in Dili's Mascarenhas district . He died at the age of 65 in the Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares (HNGV) and was buried the following day in the Becusi cemetery.
