Florian Holsboer (born May 27, 1945 in Munich ) is a Swiss chemist and doctor . From 1989 to 2014 he was director of the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich. Since July 2014 he has been managing director of HMNC GmbH, which he and Carsten Maschmeyer founded in 2010 .

Life

Florian Holsboer is the son of the Swiss actor, director and theater manager Willem Holsboer and his wife Margot Holsboer, nee. Rupp, who was also an actress. His great-grandfather was Willem Jan Holsboer . Holsboer is married to Valerie Holsboer . They have a daughter together.

After graduating from Luitpold-Gymnasium in Munich in 1965, Holsboer studied chemistry until 1971 . He then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Inorganic Chemistry at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Here he was in 1975 when Wolfgang Beck with a thesis on applications of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ligand field theory to Dr. rer. nat. PhD . From 1974, studied Holsboer at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University medicine . He was there in 1979 with a biochemical work for Dr. med. PhD.

After completing his medical studies, he became an assistant doctor at the mental hospital of the same university in 1979 , and in 1981 he moved to the psychiatric clinic of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz , where he completed his further training as a specialist in neurology and completed his habilitation in 1984 . In 1986 he was offered the chair of psychiatry at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , of which he headed the psychiatric clinic from 1987 to 1989. In 1988 he was appointed scientific member and director of the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich by the Max Planck Society. He took up this position in 1989.

In 2003 he founded a biotechnology company, Affectis Pharmaceuticals AG (formerly NeuroNova AG ), of which he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board from 2003 to 2007. Together with the financial entrepreneur Carsten Maschmeyer , Holsboer founded HolsboerMaschmeyer NeuroChemie (HMNC) GmbH in December 2010, which deals with the personalized therapy of depression and develops new drugs against diseases of the nervous system. He has been CEO of HMNC GmbH since 2014 . In addition, he is a member of the medical advisory board of Medical Park AG, advisor to the psychosomatic clinic Chiemseeblick , managing director of the non-profit NeuroNova gGmbH, and a member of the board of directors of the Swiss DJE Finanz AG. Together with a partner, he runs a community psychiatric practice in Munich.

Act

Florian Holsboer's scientific interest is in the molecular genetic and biochemical causes of depression and anxiety disorders , sleep disorders and the adaptation to stressful situations. In the field of neurology , his research focus is multiple sclerosis . Holsboer is a representative of personalized medicine , in particular he advocates the thesis that in addition to clinical symptoms and findings, specific genetic examinations and biomarkers must be used to characterize the patient.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported that Florian Holsboer was criticized during the internal evaluation of the MPI for Psychiatry at the latest since 2009. In 2013, after further criticism, the general administration of the Max Planck Society reacted by blocking Holsboer's budget, among other things. Holsboer retired in July 2014.

In 2009 an autobiography was published entitled Biology for the Soul .

Holsboer belongs to several scientific organizations: since 1999 he has been an honorary member of the American College of Psychiatrists , since 1994 a Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology , in 1999 he was elected to the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina and since 1991 he has been an honorary professor at the Ludwig-Maximilians -University of Munich.
