Barra Airport ( IATA code : BRR , ICAO code : EGPR ; also Barra Eoligarry Airport or Scottish Gaelic Port-adhair Bharraigh ) is the only airport on the Scottish island of Barra , which belongs to the Outer Hebrides in the Atlantic . The airfield is located near the scattered settlement Eoligarry on the Eoligarry peninsula in the bay of Traigh Mhòr and is the only airfield next to that of the Australian island of Fraser Island , where the beach also forms the runway. The landing and take-off times of the planes depend on the tides , as the entire beach and thus also the runways are covered by the water during high tide. The airfield has three runways that are designed only for STOL aircraft such as Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander or DHC-6 Twin Otter . Only emergency transports may take place at night; Flights from scheduled or charter planes are not allowed at night. The airport is operated by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited , which is responsible for numerous small airports and airfields in Scotland and Northern Ireland .
