The Domodedovo Airport ( IATA : DME , ICAO : UUDD , Russian Домодедово ) is the second largest airport in the Russian capital Moscow . It is located south of the metropolis, 35 kilometers from the city center and 22 kilometers from the Moscow ring road MKAD , near the city ​​of the same name . The height above sea level is 181 m.

Originally intended primarily for domestic air traffic , numerous companies have relocated their Moscow flights to Domodedovo due to increasing problems at Moscow's largest airport, Sheremetyevo . The private operating company pursues the concept of a modern airport with western standards.

On January 24, 2011, the airport was the target of a terrorist attack .

In 2017 over 30 million passengers flew over Domodedovo. This makes Domodedovo Moscow's second most popular airport, after Sheremetyevo and ahead of Vnukovo . The airport is operated by East Line , which has leased the airport for 75 years. East Line owns the two terminals and various other facilities. Only the airfield remains under state control.

In 2006, the terminal was divided into a national and an international terminal and generously expanded. This increased the capacity from 14 million passengers to 21 million. In addition to the two terminals, there are also apron parking spaces for aircraft, to which you can be driven with Neoplan or Cobus 3000 airport transport buses.

There are two runways to be approached in parallel, 3000 and 3800 m long. Space for six more runways is shown in the zoning plans. A total of 70 take-offs and landings can be handled at the airport per hour.

On January 24, 2011, at 4:32 p.m. local time, an explosion occurred in the area of ​​the airport terminal, killing 35 people and injuring 170 people. Apparently it was a suicide attack .

Connection to Moscow

  • The fastest connection is the Aeroexpress train, which runs every 30/60 minutes without stopping to the Paveletsky train station and three times a day to the Kursk train station and to the Kalanchovskaya train station . The journey time is around 45 minutes, a single ticket costs 470 rubles in 2nd class (“Standard”) and 1,000 rubles in 1st class (“Business Class”). At times it was possible to purchase online tickets that were 10% cheaper, as well as a “Metro +” ticket, which is also valid for a trip on the metro . The previously offered check-in at the Pawelez train station was discontinued on January 1, 2011.
  • The trip with the normal suburban train costs only 84 rubles, but the journey takes about 80 minutes and there is no regular timetable.
  • Buses and shared taxis run from the Domodedovskaya metro station on the "green" Samoskvorezkaya line to the airport.
  • The airport can be reached via a branch off the Russian M4 trunk road, which has been developed as a motorway .

The Aeroexpress trains are now combined in one company. It publishes an information sheet with all three lines and has a homepage. A quick change of airport is possible by using the metro between 2 destination stations:

The metro journey between 2 train stations takes about 30 minutes. It takes about 3 hours to change airports between two Moscow airports. This is usually much faster than a taxi.

Parking space for aircraft

Between the two runways in a south-easterly direction from the terminal building, a large number of older Russian commercial aircraft, some of which have already been cannibalized (engines, doors and various reusable spare parts removed), are parked. Many of them come from airlines that no longer exist, such as B. Domodedovo Airlines or AiRUnion.

But even today existing Russian airlines park decommissioned aircraft there. The Russian airline Transaero retired all Boeing 747-200 / -300 aircraft in 2013. Some of them were parked there.

A Boeing 737-200 is also parked south of runway 14L. For a long time, the wreckage of a Tu-154 that crashed in 2010 lay at the end of runway 14L.

Airlines

The then Swissair was the first international airline to fly to the airport in 2001. British Airways followed in 2006 . In total, well over 80 different airlines now offer flights to Domodedovo. The German Lufthansa had also relocated its entire flight operations to Domodedovo for the 2008 summer flight schedule.
