The Magadan Sokol Airport ( Russian Аэропорт Сокол ; IATA code GDX, ICAO code UHMM) is the international airport of the city of Magadan in the Far East of Russia . It is not far from the Sokol settlement , on the M56 (" Kolymatrakt ") road, a good 50 kilometers from Magadan.

history

Construction began in early 1960. Flight operations began on January 12, 1961 with the first regular flight from Moscow to Magadan, according to other information, the first stage of the runway was not completed until 1963, so that Magadan was supported by Il-18 aircraft , An-10 and An-12 could be approached. Construction of the airport was completed in 1966, but the terminal was not completed until 1974. In December 1980 the runway was reconstructed, and on December 13, 1980, a long-haul airliner of the type Il-62 landed for the first time .

The first "western" airline to fly to Magadan was Alaska Airlines in 1991 with an MD-80 . In 2000 the airport was expanded to include an international terminal.

Today mainly Russian airlines fly to Magadan, including S7 , Transaero and Vladivostok Avia , both with Russian types and with Boeing 767 , Airbus A320 and others. Main destinations are Moscow and various cities in Siberia and the Far East of Russia. Regional flight operations are mainly carried out by Yakutia Airlines and IrAero , which fly to Anadyr , Jagodnoye , Jakutsk , Omsuktschan , Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky , Seimtschan , Severo-Evensk and Sussuman with An-24 , An-28 and An-140 , among others (as of October 2012).

With Magadan there is a bus connection every 40 minutes between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. the journey time is 60 to 70 minutes.
