The Foinikas Syrou , full name: Athlitikos Omilos Foinikas (tis) Syrou (German: 'Sportverein Foinikas (von) Syros'), ( Greek Φοίνικας Σύρου , complete: Αθλητικός Όμιλος , known as Foinikas οίνικς Σύρrosυα , at the European level) is a Greek volleyball club from Syros . The club plays its games in Ermoupolis .

history

The AO Foinikas was founded as a sports club on December 7, 1980 in Foinikas on Syros and registered as such in early 1981. First, the club management installed a football department. Later one for basketball. From 1984 another one for volleyball followed . The football team played in the lowest divisions in Greece until it was dissolved in 1999. The volleyball players, however, celebrated their first regional championship in 1991. They repeated this success in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2000, before they also managed to move up to the fourth Greek league in the 1999/2000 season. This they finished on the first rank, which entitled to promotion to the third division. The Foinikas Syrou was the first club in the Cyclades archipelago to do so. The promotion to the second division took place in the 2005/06 season and the way to the House of Lords, the first Greek division, followed in the 2008/09 season.

The AO Foinikas finished their first first-class season in fifth place. This success entitles them to participate in the BVA Cup the following year. Due to the double burden, the club was unable to keep the class for the 2009/10 season and was relegated from the first division together with AEK Athens . The direct resurgence led the club to the first runner-up and the final of the league cup in the 2011/12 season. While the championship was missed, the league cup was secured by a 3-0 set win over Apollon Kalamarias . In the 2012/13 season, the club took part in the Challenge Cup competition. In the same year they also reached the final of the domestic club cup. There they were defeated with 0: 3 sets to Olympiacos Piraeus . In the league they reached fifth place.
