Abiant Lycurgus Groningen is a Dutch volleyball club from Groningen . The first men's team plays in the national league and has been competing in the European Cup for several years.

history

The club was founded in 1952 by Joop van der Veen, Harm Veenhoff and Dick van Mansom and initially also had a football department.

In the 1970s, the Groningen volleyball players were promoted to the top division. In the 2011/12 season they reached the national playoff final for the first time and had to admit defeat Langhenkel Doetinchem . The following year the runner-up reached the final again and lost it to Landstede Zwolle . The same duel took place in 2014/15 and Groningen was runner-up again. The club won the double the following season. In the 2016 cup final, Groningen beat Zwolle 3-1 and the team won the championship playoff final with three wins against Orion Doetinchem . In the 2016/17 season, Groningen managed to defend its title in the championship in another playoff final against Doetinchem.

In the 2017/18 European Cup season, Groningen first played in the Champions League . After victories against KV Luboteni Ferizaj from Kosovo, Abiant Lycurgus was eliminated in the second round against Belgian representative Noliko Maaseik . The team then took part in the CEV Cup . In the sixteenth finals she was defeated by the German Bundesliga team SWD Powervolleys Düren after a golden set.

Venues

The home of the club is the Topsportcentrum Kardinge. For some games, the team also moves to the larger Martini Plaza.
