Regional historical association for the Mark Brandenburg

The State Historical Association for the Mark Brandenburg e. V. ( listen ? / I ) is one of the largest and oldest history societies in the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg with around 800 members . The association was founded in 1884 under the name Tourist Club for the Mark Brandenburg ; The aim was to hike the Mark Brandenburg . Theodor Fontane was the first honorary member of the association . In contrast to local homeland associations , the association deals with topics from the entire area of ​​both federal states as well as all areas that belonged to Brandenburg at any point in time. The main activities of the association are

  • the exploration of Brandenburg on excursions and hikes
  • promoting scientific research into the history of the state through lectures, conferences and publications
  • the collection of literature and sources in an archive and a publicly accessible library comprising around 40,000 volumes in the Berlin Central and State Library

The association publishes the Yearbook for Brandenburg State History ( ISSN  0447-2683 ). The volumes of the yearbook between 1950 and 1969 have been made available online in full text via a server at the Humboldt University.

The chairman of the association is the Berlin historian Peter Bahl , his deputies Frank Göse and Gerhard Weiduschat.

Fontane badge

The Fontane plaque is a medal that has been awarded by the State Historical Association for the Mark Brandenburg since 1911. It is awarded for “long-term membership in connection with special services to the association” - sometimes several medals in one year. In the beginning, the medal was partly awarded to organizations, later exclusively to individual members. The medal was designed in 1911 by the teacher, sculptor and medalist Paul Matzdorf . Between 1928 and 1969 the medal was awarded in a bronze version and a silver version. Until 1935 the medal was awarded under the old club name.
