Fran Crippen

Francis "Fran" Crippen (born April 17, 1984 in Bryn Mawr , † October 23, 2010 in Fujairah , United Arab Emirates ) was an American swimmer .

Fran Crippen came from a family who loved swimming. His three sisters are also active in swimming. Maddy Crippen participated in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , Claire Crippen competed in US championships and is a swimmer in the NCAA and Teresa Crippen won two titles in the 2007 Pan American Games .

Crippen studied at the University of Virginia , for which he also started. He has been All-American eleven times and has been named Swimmer of the Year at the Atlantic Coast Conference twice. He was twice US champion in the 800-meter freestyle. In 2001 he won his first international medal as a member of the US team at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane : a bronze. Two years later, the specialist won the silver medals over the medium and especially long distances in Santo Domingo at the 2003 Pan American Games in the 400 and 1500 meter freestyle. He also won a silver medal at the 2006 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Victoria .

Crippen had switched from pool to open water swimming this season and finished second behind Chip Peterson over 10 kilometers. From 2006 to 2008 he swam for the Viejo Nadadores Mission and was trained by Bill Rose . The Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2007 brought Crippen the first and only international title win over 10 kilometers. Two years later, the American achieved his greatest international success at the 2009 World Swimming Championships in Rome , when he won the bronze medal over 10 kilometers behind Thomas Lurz and his compatriot Andrew Gemmell . He also finished seventh over 5 kilometers. The following year, he repeated this medal win at the 2010 Open Water World Championships in Roberval behind Lurz and Evgeni Dratzew , now over 5 kilometers. Over 10 kilometers he just missed another medal in fourth place. In 2010, in Viedma and Cancún , he also won two races of the World Cup over 10 kilometers. The last major event was the 2010 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Irvine , where Crippen won silver over the 10 kilometer distance behind Chip Peterson.

At the World Cup race in October 2010 in the Arab emirate of Fujairah, he did not reach the finish line and was found by divers on one of the turning buoys two hours after the end of the race. Only his death could be determined in the hospital. The cause of death was possibly cardiovascular failure. After the competition, several other swimmers had to be treated for overheating due to high temperatures.
